GHC Heavyweight Title: KENTA vs. Katsuhiko Nakajima 33:41. After 4 fights as juniors, including trading the GHC Junior Heavyweight Title, it was only fitting that Nakajima's 1st GHC Heavyweight challenge came against KENTA. This was towards the end of KENTA's big title reign, and he was trying to tie Morishima for 3rd all time with 8 defenses. As you'd expect given it was a 33:41 heavyweight title match, this was a slower and less urgent version of what they had been doing, although since it was a big show main event, they added a few more dangerous moves. For the most part, this was two great wrestlers devolving into all the pitfalls and tropes of modern wrestling, doing a meandering, repetitive match that went on and on without going anywhere. There were too many no defense toe to toe 50/50 exchanges and rest holds passing as submissions to pad the time. KENTA had 1 burst, but otherwise it was slow and lacked even a lot of the story they'd tried to put into their previous matches. As with all their matches, it was primarily a kicking battle, and this had some of the most impressive thudding you'll hear on every shot. They tried a little harder to tell a story, but as had been a problem with their previous matches, neither have much diversity or a lot of offense beyond their kicks. They began to tell the same stories of Nakajima attacking the knee and KENTA attacking the ribs, but neither were particularly fleshed out, and played little to no role during the later stages. The match was mostly built around strike exchange's patterned after their mentors, KENTA Kobashi vs. Kensuke Sasaki, except these two used middle kicks. Nakajima's knee attack started when KENTA kicked the ring post due to Nakajima ducking his high kick. Nakajima followed with a kneebreaker onto a ringside table, and then one onto the ring apron, but it never really took off. It's emblematic of how meandering this match was becoming that they took a detour all the way to the stage in the back just for a penalty kick, which doesn't benefit or become any more dangerous from being on the stage, then fought all the way back to the ring. KENTA flew a long way on an awesome footstomp off the top with Nakajima draped over the guard rail. KENTA began to pick up the pace after this, including the diving footstop in the ring. Nakajima came back with a big avalanche style Death Valley bomb though. KENTA got a big near fall countering a running kick with the go 2 sleep. KENTA finally broke up one of their 50/50 middle kick exchanges, almost finishing Nakajima off with a series of fast overhand palms followed by a couple of high kicks with Nakajima on his knees. KENTA was then able to hit the go 2 sleep for the win. These two really battered and blistered each other, but unfortunately the match was little more than who could withstand more big kicks. This was their worst match. ***

Global League 2013 Block A: Katsuhiko Nakajima [4] vs. KENTA [2] 19:52. We finally got a reasonable length match. Granted, this was another small show match in the midst of another long grueling league like 10/25/09, and honestly the effort was reasonably not as high as in their big title match from earlier in the month. However, the more manageable length kept them from having to worry about simply surviving an endless match, and allowed them to utilize their energy more efficiently, resulting in this being their best match together since March 1st, 2009 match. Being compressed kept it from becoming repetitive, as they were able to do their better stuff once without having to worry about filling the time. Having more activity and movement was a benefit, and they just did a better job of building up to the finish rather than simply pacing themselves throughout. Their October 5th big show match was very brutal, and probably because they were less interested in killing each other for a few hundred people, they decided to go back to doing more of a junior heavyweight style, which played a lot better than a less urgent, lower intensity striking match would have. I found the athletic moves to be an improvement over consistent kicking, and even their striking was more interesting if less stiff than their staple standing exchanges, as they incorporated more combination striking. There was a good counter where KENTA dropkicked Nakajima out of midair to stop the sankakugiri. While this match was only good at the start, it's the only one where they really increased the pace and intensity dramatically, building up to something that was arguably four star level in the second half. The biggest issue with this match is the finisher wasn't very believable, as after they've taken 9 zillion big kicks throughout the series, going from KENTA almost having the match won to Nakajima suddenly finishing him out of nowhere after one rather pedestrian high kick was just bizarre. ***1/2
