Episode #1 3/13/04

3/5/87 Bradford, GBR aired 4/25, World Mid-Heavyweight Title Decision Match: "Bronco" Owen Hart vs. Marty Jones R10 2:00 (R3 & 4 skipped). The influence of Owen's world travels is well documented, but I feel like the British style was probably the one that suited the way he enjoyed wrestling the best because everything is build from, out of, off, and through the most basic technical moves. In this case, the arm bar carried the early portion of the match, facilitating the multitudes of counters that brought the technique and especially athleticism and acrobatics that separted him to the forefront. Though the early portion was somewhat lacking in intensity despite the obvious skill on display, as they progressively built upon the arm bar with Jones hammerlock slams then left the arm bar for Owen's running and jumping spots, you truly felt as though they were doing something, and that it mattered. In a sense, the match was very much what you expected, but there was a subtlety to it that's difficult to grasp. They did a good job of building the match through the counters, and of easing you into what's more traditionally refered to as high spots that you were increasingly more deeply immersed in their world until you were swept away. It was almost as though what made the match so good was their skill wasn't so obvious that you were thinking about what great workers they were rather than who was controlling and winning. Though Jones can play heel and rough it up with the best of them, this was wrestled and called almost entirely as sport, as an honorable competition for the vacant crown, complete with Owen getting on the mic after the match to give Jones credit and congratulate him. While there was certainly ahead of the time offense, mainly from Owen, as Jones seemed to actively try to stay on his feet whenever it was reasonable, the charm of the match is it felt like it could just as easily have been wrestled anytime in the previous 30 or 40 years. It was more hard hitting than spectacular, with Jones using some big slams, but they understood how and when to play off of each other and change the advantage. The biggest downside of the match is it started kind of slow. Since the 3rd and 4th rounds are missing, it definitely feels like the majority of the quality was saved for the second half. Owen's plane was late, so the match was delayed to the taping for the 2nd show of the night, and even then the match started almost as soon as he arrived, so he had to warm up in the ring. I love Owen's hurracarrana because he actually hooks his feet on the opponent's stomach to utilize his lower body in taking them over. Owen also did a cool bridging overhead suplex out of the wristlock. I thought they were going to do a double count out when both went over the top, crashing to the floor after Owen countered Jones' charge with an arm drag, but soon after they reentered, Jones just won with a small package out of nowhere. I would have liked to have seen some quicker technical wrestling, and more tumbling, but this was quite entertaining. ***3/4

Episode #60 10/23/04:

9/28/74: Aki Mojo vs. Johnny Czeslaw

3/27/82: Marty Jones vs. Caswell Martin. Jones was one of the most technically proficient opponents of Tiger Mask, able to chain grapple at lightning speed & really bridge the gap between gymnastics & technical wrestling into its own sort of ballet that was similar to lucha libre except with the emphasis totally on the locks rather than the flying. Martin had some tours of Japan as well with NJ & original UWF, & had a lot of success in Germany & Austria, winning some tournaments, but wasn't nearly as big a star in the UK as he should have been because they somehow never figured out what to do with him beyond billing him from Antigua in the West Indies & giving him the nickname Cast Iron. He was a great athlete as well, & was right there with Jones in everything he tried. They had great timing & chemistry & did a really exciting junior style face vs. face technical match where both used their speed & athleticism to make their technical wrestling a lot more impressive, and especially to counter everything the opponent threw at them. It was one of those matches where the aggressor was made a fool of 8 times out of 10, though by starting the sequence of counters they still won the war sometimes. Neither man had anything resembling big moves, but they were fantastic tumblers who fought a no b.s. perpetual motion style where they found one escape from what the opponent was trying to do after another until they finally caught the opponent off guard & got a fall before the opponent knew what hit them. No one ever gained any kind of a decisive advantage & the match never slowed down, with each getting a flash pin then Jones finally winning in the 5th when Martin tried a high cross body but was too close to the ropes so instead of Jones going all the way down to the canvas, he hurt his back when he was stopped by the top rope & Martin was thus sent crashing to the floor for the TKO. The match felt like a legitimate sporting event, and Jones, unsatisfied with winning such a good back & forth contest by accident, did the honorable thing & had the decision overturned to a no contest. ****

Steve Grey (British Lightweight Champ) vs. Johnny Saint (World Lightweight Champ) R7 1:52. Arguably the pinnacle of top this tumbling ballet, the spectacle in this supremely gymnastic grappling contest largely came through defending the opponent's lock by jumping, rolling, or twisting with incredible precision at lightning speed to alleviate the pressure, and hopefully actually seize control. These two might not be doing flips onto one another, but their speed, quickness, athleticism, and body control pretty clearly exceed that of virtually any great high flyer. This was pretty far from shoot wrestling in a lot of respects, but it actually did a much better job of emulating MMA in the sense that their entries were lightning fast, the scrambles were quick and urgent, and they only stayed put to set up the next explosion. I mean, these aspects are among the reasons that would later make Kiyoshi Tamura the greatest worked shooter, but he rarely had an opponent that was fully on board with the high speed style. That being said, despite displaying the creativity of Volk Han to craft unique crazy submission set pieces, Saint vs. Grey is more akin to lucha ballet in the sense that it's a very low impact and pressure style that is more about poetry in motion than actually hurting one another. It's a rare face vs. face match setup by British Lightweight Champion Grey defeating World Lightweight Champion Saint in December, but for some reason still having to do it again a few weeks later to simply earn the world title shot. They devoted almost the entire 1st round to Grey doing every counter he could think of - even using the ref's shoulder to aid a backflip - to escape a simple armbar that almost anywhere else would merely have been a boring throwaway rest hold. The rare moment they weren't in some sort of arm or leg lock in the first three rounds was when they found themselves taking a flip bump to alleviate the pressure. The beauty of the match is that it's somehow lightning pace despite this lack of space and freedom, as although they are tied up, since they don't control the body the defender is free to constantly move, trying every turn and contortion they can think of to ease the pain. Each round wound up being a continuous chain of holds and counter holds, pausing only to set up the next explosion. Even though there's a clear shift in styles, and an escalation, it isn't the usual one where someone starts punching and cheating. Things begin to change in the 4th when they start doing running and jumping sequences. This portion manages to be just as insanely intricate as the grappling tumbling in the 1st 3 rounds was, exceeding the skill level of the best junior heavyweight wrestling of the time while still remaining true to their own style, setting up Saint taking the 1st fall. Grey hurt Saint with a knee drop to the arm early in the fifth, but injures his knee going for it again later in the round. While the bout remained honorable, Saint shifted from his more exhibition mode, and began to target his submissions to the weak point. Grey sold huge in between rounds, but had to keep defending himself during the actual fight. Saint thought he had Grey where he wanted him in round 6 after avoiding a dropkick, but Grey caught Saint overcommitting for the finish, countering Saint's hip toss into a backslide to even the match. Saint returned to the bad knee to start the 7th, but got sucked into an amazing junior style counter sequence after landing on his feet to avoid a monkey flip, ultimately getting flash pinned after an intricate series of counters. Great, great match with amazing performances by both men, who due a similar style, and are able to play into their strengths to compliment each other perfectly.

Jim Breaks vs. Sammy Lee R4 1:20. Sayama's speed is off the charts to the point you almost need to put him in slow motion. He isn't doing much offensively, but he makes such explosive manuevers into his actual move that anything he does is impressive. Breaks is mostly taking shortcuts, and isn't bringing much to the table. There isn't much in the way of interplay or cooperation between the two, instead it's mostly you do your hold and I'll do mine, and the falls come too quickly and easily, so it never really comes together. **1/4

1/28/80 Reading: Johnny Saint vs. Steve Grey R7 1:52.

Jushin Thunder Liger in the UK
-2 1/2hr. Q=Good. 1 DVD

11/14/87: Fuji Yamada vs John Wilkie R3 1:38. Wilkie is an unskilled brawler who just puts the boots to you. Yamada showed some hot moves, but they were all isolated spots where he jumped at his inept opponent. *1/2

11/28/87: Fuji Yamada vs. Rocky Moran 10:23 of 11:08. Yamada had the offense and aerial ability to get over. Still, they gave him a Bruce Lee gimmick with the short haircut and a prematch martial arts demonstration with his partner Clive Myers. Fast paced match with nice sequences. Yamada's athleticism exceeds his offense, but his offense was well ahead of his time and Moran did a good job of taking it. Yamada was very smooth in chaining his offense together, and showed a lot more diversity against the capable opponent. ***1/4

Clive Myers & Fuji Yamada vs. Mark Rocco & Kendo Nagasaki 19:43. Myers was a great athlete, but didn't use it well. He was basically a showboater who used generic moves that had all the stiffness of Shawn Michaels. Nagasaki was out of place in a match with three guys wrestling junior style, and typically added nothing to the match. Nagasaki injured Yamada's back with an illegal body slam over the top to the floor. **1/4

1986, Tag Tournament Semifinal: Clive Myers & Fuji Yamada vs John Wilkie & Zigue Zag 14:30. Myers flexability was impressive, but he had about the lowest impact martial arts offense known to man. Wilkie and Zag just cheated. Yamada showed a few hot moves, but this was the typical 80's tag match where the heels cheat to keep the face from tagging. The faces eventually got to show their offense, but the heels were overselling badly. I don't go for politically correct lies, but some of the things the announcer was saying were pretty scary, especially since they weren't intended to be derogatory. When Yamada did a reverse body attack off the 2nd, the announcer said, "Bonzai! The Jap bounces off the corner!" Later when Yamada did a diving headbutt he said, "And now the Jap going for some aerial work. We're talking Pearl Harbor!" *3/4

1986, Tag Tournament Semifinal: Clive Myers & F uji Yamada vs Rocky Moran & Blondie Barrett 11:05. These heels were way better than Wilkie & Zag. Not only did they use wrestling moves they fought a quick pace. Match tended to be more exciting than good as it was a bit sloppy. **1/4

3/12/88, 2/3 Falls Professional Wrestling World Heavy-Middleweight Championship: Fuji Yamada vs Mark Rocco 20:43. Rocco was a very smart wrestler who knew how to make his opponent look good and garner them added support from the crowd. Well worked match pitting Yamada's daring against Rocco's brain. Rocco carried the match, allowing Yamada to showcase his flying. ***1/4

Fuji Yamada vs Skull Murphy 8:34. Yamada didn't do his flying until it was time to win the fall. Before that he looked like a jobber. Murphy didn't do any wrestling, and Yamada began cheating to combat him. I'm not sure if the fans were rooting for Yamada, or mainly just against Skull. *

Fuji Yamada vs Shaun South 8:57. One sided but exciting match with South putting Yamada over the entire time. Yamada was really showing his stuff. **1/4

Fuji Yamada vs Mark Rocco 8:36. Rocco is a clever and crafty opponent who certainly gets a lot more out of Yamada than any of his other UK opposition. Yamada's high spots meant more here because they were his offense in a make or break way. The spots were set up well, and you never know if they'll be successful.  Much closer to the classic Tiger Mask vs. Black Tiger matches than the earlier Yamada vs. Rocco. This would have been an excellent match if it wasn't so brief. ***1/4

WOS Title #1 Contendership Five Way Match: Justin Sysum vs. Adam Maxted vs. Crater vs. Rampage vs. Sha Samuels

Davey Boy Smith Jr. vs. Will Ospreay. Good short match. Davey destroys Ospreay's knee early to try to slow down his flying, but Ospreay gets a bunch of spectacular spots in once he gets going before getting crushed when Davey counters him with an avalanche style powerslam for the win.

WOS Title Three Way Match: Grado vs. Rampage vs. Justin Sysum

WOS Title Match: Rampage vs. Joe Hendry

Four Way Ladder Match: Gabriel Kidd vs. Liam Slater vs. Lionheart vs. Robbie X. X showed the most impressive offense with a moonsault off the ladder & springboard ace crusher.

WOS Tag Title Tournament First Round Match: Adam Maxted & Nathan Cruz vs. Doug Williams & HT Drake

WOS Women's Title Three Way Decision Match: Kay Lee Ray vs. Bea Priestley vs. Viper. Essentially a handicap match, as Ray & Priestly mostly went 2-1 against Viper until they'd take her out momentarily then get to do some actual interesting wrestling on their own. The difference in the speed & modernity of the sequences Viper wasn't involved in was quite stark. Viper did one cool spot catching Priestly's rana off the apron & turning it into a powerbomb, which took her out then Ray scored the upset on Viper out of nowhere to become the 1st champ, which was a pleasant surprise.

WOS Women's Title Match: Kay Lee Ray vs. Bea Priestley

Will Ospreay vs. Martin Kirby. Spectacular one man show from Will, with Kirby knowing to stay out of the way & do faster paced, athletic stuff to set Will up rather than just stagnating the Match: with brawl & stall like the NJ heel slugs would do.

WOS Tag Title Tournament First Round Match: Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Grado vs. Crater & Robbie X

WOS Title #1 Contendership Justin Sysum vs. Joe Hendry vs. Nathan Cruz

2/19/18 Defiant Interim Internet Title Four Way Elimination Match: Travis Banks vs. Chris Brookes vs. David Starr vs. Mike Bailey 18:57. Rather than working two matches at once, they did this the same way they'd do a 3 way, just switching off while the other guys got to be Naito. Though one could certainly argue this made it even that much more contrived, it had its benefits in allowing them to do a long, varied match without padding that was also much easier to actually follow. Format aside, the match once again showed how great Bailey is, just stealing the show in every matchup with his athleticism, diversity, and acting. He's the only wrestler who has ever really successfully incorporated taekwondo, and among the handful of best flyers around pulling off gymnastic stunts such as the corkscrew standing shooting star press with the greatest of ease. Bailey is such a fun character as well, able to intelligently convey what he's about to do in the old silent movie comic style when he needs to, but he doesn't overdo it. When it's advancing the match by setting something up or showing the change from wrestling honorably to making someone who disrespected the rules, and thus him, pay, he relies on his acting, otherwise he let's his wrestling do the talking. Bailey was a really good opponent for Banks shoot style because he's actually a technically proficient martial artist, and this was the best combo during the bulk of the match. There were 8 dives, with some amazing ones by Bailey as well as a creative one where Bailey broke Banks rear naked choke by standing & darting for the ropes, diving to the floor onto the others with Banks on his back to break it. Brookes was the definition of should be good but actually isn't as usual, doing the same handful of things he always does competently, with the exception ofneeding a second try to drape Bailey's feet over the top rope. He didn't hurt the match, but whereas Bailey sees creative possibilities especially of how to incorporate his moves, Brookes just reverts to what he can do the same way he always does it, and whereas Starr will bust anything to get the match to a reasonable level, Brookes shows no particular inspiration. Brookes was the 1st to get eliminated, and not surprisingly, it came down to Banks vs. Starr, as that was the rivalry they were playing up from the outset. What was surprising, is this final section was actually the highlight of the match. Starr generally isn't the cleanest or crispest worker at this point, but you know he'll go the extra mile in the effort & desire to make it good to mostly make up for that, and these two really stepped it up once Bailey wasn't around to make them look so inferior. Starr literally just did strikes until the final segment, saving his entire move set for the big sprint to the finish. The match wasn't particularly intense until this point, but with the title so close they were able to convey that taking the belt home really did matter, and that took the contest to another level that it's hard for a 4 way to reach when they're just randomly swapping guys in and out. I liked the spot where Banks went for a tope, but Starr got onto the apron quickly and cut him off with an apron DDT. Starr countering the slice of heaven, which Banks got a near fall with earlier, with a lariat and pulling him off the 2nd into a powerbomb backbreaker seemed a perfect finish, but Banks again kicked out. Starr kept beating on Banks until he was barely responding then went to finish with an avalance style superplex, but Banks came back to life, countering with a kiwi crusher off the 2nd to take the title. ***3/4
