Arkangel Divino & Black Destiny & Genio del Aire vs. Black Danger & Mirage & Ultimo Maldito 9:01. A 9 minute opener doesn't sound like it would be something to go out of your way to check out, but these guys are so unbelievably fast & packed so much action into the time they had it wound up containing more flashy offense then you'd see on most whole shows. Yes, it was a sprint & a spotfest, but the level of difficulty was incredibly high, and they pulled it off with precision & impeccable timing. This wasn't we'll do a bunch of flips & thus it'll be great, it was how fast & how difficult can we make this ballet & still pull it off without killing each other. If you don't like acrobatic displays then sure, you probably still won't like it, but this wasn't merely an all out effort, it was a beautiful display of mad genius. The overclocked action was sort of just a lengthy finishing sequence, as they were doing their best spots & making saves seemingly from the outset. Divino & Maldito were really the heroes, and if there's room for improvement somewhere it would be swapping some of the others, perhaps Mirage. The early high speed tilt-a-whirl spot with Divino & Maldito had Maldito turning Divino so fast it was unreal, like what those awful fast forwarded martial arts schlockfests would be if they had Bruce Lee instead of no talent hacks that need to be put on 10x speed in a failed attempt to mask their lack of any real skill or ability. These two also did the most insane spot near the end where both were standing on the top & Divino super Frankensteinered Maldito to the floor onto Aire & Danger. Divino then got Mirage on his shoulders on the floor & Destiny hit a doomsday tope. They finished going back to the tilt-a-whirling with Divino hitting his high speed Mistica on Maldito for the win. The match isn't long enough to be match of the year or anything, but it's most definitely at the very high end of how far a short athletic contest can be pushed. ****

AAA World Cruiserweight Title #1 Contendership Four Way Match: Lanzeloth vs. Dinastia vs. Mascara de Bronce vs. El Hijo del Vikingo 6:32. This would have seemed a lot more awesome had it not come after an ever better version of the same thing in the opener. That being said, while this was even shorter, it can't be dismissed. It was probably as spectacular & maybe more thoughtful, though it edged more toward being a collection of crazy stunts than a really intricately timed high speed match. The four way aspect actually really worked well here & gave it some good differentiation from match 1 though, coming off more as a match 1 man survived than something he actually won. They did a nice job of switching between having 2 matches going on at once & having guys interject in the other pairings' action to keep things moving in an unpredictable manner & minimize the contrived aspects that normally mar these kind of matches because two guys wing up just lying around or holding each other waiting for the other two to be finished. Vikingo did a shooting star attack off the apron. Lanzeloth's Spanish fly looked extra good because Bronce really lept into it, leading to a heavy crash landing, though it would have made a lot more sense to have Vikingo follow with his shooting star press onto the guy who took the move rather than having Lanzeloth roll to his back & keep creeping toward the corner so he wasn't too far away for Vikingo to reach. Bronce avenged hitting with a super spanish fly to take out Vikingo & Dinastia on the floor. This left Bronce & Lanzeloth, but Lanzeloth getting his knees up for Bronce's 450 splash before pinning him with a diving footstomp didn't work quite right. ***
AAA World Tag Team Title Match: El Texano Jr. & Rey Escorpion vs. Aero Star & Drago 11:08. This was the sort of opportunity I was wanting Aero & Drago to get all season of Lucha Underground. They had time, and a great catcher in Escorpion to make all their crazy flying come off perfectly. This was simply an aerial assault from Aero & Drago, really just barraging the opponents with their flying, as soon as one got you the other nailed you, and by then the first one was once again leaping at the rudos. The match felt like a tag title match the way they used to in the '80's when you had tag specialists, as most of what they did was done in tandem and/or unison. Texano was the offensive star for the rudos, tossing them around with his power moves a bit more than Escorpion including a big powerbomb off the 2nd, though again, you had them double press slamming Drago on the announcers tab rather than doing a lot of isolated individual moves. The match wasn't as consistently spectacular as the opener because technico & rudo were very much defined, but Aero & Drago were super explosive with all their flying combined with Escorpion doing flips to make their ranas look that much more impressive. The rudos did a bunch of high impact moves, often on the run, so the pace was pretty fantastic nonetheless, mostly because the rudos refused to slow things down for the usual lame stomps & static brawling. Though Tirantes Jr. was given no reason to be involved throughout the match, the finish was just terrible. I don't care so much that he counted a double pin after an eye gouge & blatant holding of both ropes as that in a match where all the offense was so great they wanted to end with such nonsense, particularly the cradle reversal to Drago's corner sunset flip where Texano had Drago down for literally 13 seconds off no offensive maneuever of his own without Drago even trying to jerk or buck. ***3/4
Ten Way TLC Match: Pagano vs. Cuervo vs. El Hijo del Fantasma vs. Escoria vs. Histeria vs. Joe Lider vs. La Parka vs. La Parka Negra vs. Teddy Hart vs. Psicosis 13:46. They made a bunch of random attempts to kill each other, including Lider doing a Death Valley bomb off the 2nd onto a table that didn't break, Escoria doing a Spanish fly off the top to the floor onto a table that did break. Hart finally showed up at the end to chair Lider in the back, allowing Pagano to get the win with an avalanche style Death Valley bomb onto thumbtacks.

Starting the season of what's supposed to be Lucha Underground with the Red Carpet Rumble wasn't the best idea by a long shot, but they at least did a great job of reestablishing their champion Penta in his first title defense, running over legends (of a sort) such as Tommy Dreamer with the help of his own thumbtacks & clowns such as Massaro with the help of his stolen pizza. The first half was marred by guys falling to 1 move, but once Mundo & Fenix got involved they began to have an actual wrestling match, with Fenix tearning down the house. The action is pretty good in the 2nd half & it begins to feel like an actual match rather than just guys making a big entrance only to immediately be walking back to the locker room, but 19 eliminations in 31 minutes is just super rushed.

Three Way To A Grave Elimination Casket Match: Mil Muertes vs. Fenix vs. Jeremiah Crane 20:24. Crazy stunt brawl. It was fun, a lot more interesting than your average gimmick match variety stuntfest, as Fenix is an amazing legit wrestler whereas you usually get the Tommy Dreamers of the world who are doing this because otherwise he'd be doing another one of those Russian leg sweeps where the opponent never actually hits the canvas. At the same time, it was not really safe or consistent, and there were some really frustrating aspects, but the good second half that actually resembled a wrestling match with amped up insanity due to the moves being done onto tables & coffins outweighed the sketchy first half that was mostly b.s garbage brawling on the floor just enough to barely recommend it. Fenix was the strong point by a mile, and apart from barely selling anything, basically sacrificing his body to have a memorable aerial gimmick match with opponents who wouldn't deliver much of note on their own. Crane, in turn, was the weak link by an equal if not greater distance. He can roll out some messy dangerous spots like any generic indy brawler, but I would not want to have a death match with him, or any such similar trainwreck, as he's simply not safe or reliable. Poor Fenix found that out quickly when he did an amazing dive off the Modelo structure only to have Crane essentially just sidestep & allow Muertes, who was expecting help as Fenix dove for the middle, to unknowingly get stuck with trying to brace the whole fall at the last second. Fenix somehow managed to not get too injured & proceeded to take a Hiromu bump down the stairs, which Crane then mirrored. Fenix was just getting started with the insane bumps, trying to Frankensteiner Crane off the top through a table, but Crane instead shot him backwards so Fenix essentially did a diving body press through a table on the floor. Fenix just popped back up again & Crane piledrove him off the top through a table. Fenix finally sold that, & just as Crane was about to eliminate him by shutting the casket, we got a stupid run in as Ivelisse showed up & avenged Crane's hammer attack on her at Ultima Lucha 3, hitting him with it until it broke then getting the elimination. Good riddance, but it just strikes me as extra pro wrestling retarded that you can be eliminated by someone who isn't even in the match. Once Crane was eliminated it turned into more or less an actual wrestling match that took place in an actual wrestling ring, and though the super athletic Fenix & stalking powerhouse Muertes have very disperate styles, they complement each other well as Fenix leaping into Muertes power moves makes them triple impressive & Muertes, while not the most nimble or flexible, is nonetheless a solid base & springboard for flying. Fenix continued to take crazy bumps, with Muertes hitting the Hiromu overhead belly to belly into the corner, except the casket was propped up there! Muertes bent the casket choke slamming Fenix on it then finally entombed him after countering his flying move with a flatliner. Fenix was great, and Muertes really capitalizes on Fenix's athleticism to get himself over as an unstoppable undead force. ***

Gift Of The Gods Title Match: Dragon Azteca Jr. vs. Killshot 6:54. Spectacular flying action highlighted by Azteca's Frankensteiner off the top that propelled Killshot off the apron to the floor. The only thing preventing this from being the best match thusfar in season 4 is it was so short. Things would have been much more interesting if they just gave this time, and pushed Kobra cashing in on her challenge until next week. That also would have made more sense than having one of their best wrestlers lose two title matches on the same show. Azteca managed to survive the killstomp though, and Killshot never really recovered.

Lucha Underground Title Last Man Or Machine Standing Match: Pentagon Dark vs. Cage 13:17. Brutal brawl where they used every object they could find as a weapon to enhance their moves. They were just trying to kill each other, never pausing or relenting to allow the opponent to recover. Cage is hardly a great worker, but there wasn't a lot of finesse here, Penta primarily made the match taking sick bumps on Cage's assortment of now souped up power moves. That being said, this wasn't a one-sided match where the machine just tossed the skilled athlete around, Penta may have even gave more than he took, and ultimately convincingly defeated the cyborg in such a sick fashion you almost felt bad for him. This wasn't high art, but they were actually given time, and used it really well, going all out delivering one dangerous move after another until someone was incapacitated. Cage no sold Penta breaking a glass bottle over his head then broke one of his own & gored Penta with it. He tried to powerbomb Penta through a table, but Penta countered with a Death Valley bomb through the table. Cage did hit the powerbomb into the security rail, but Penta also hit the Death Valley bomb off the apron through a table. Cage stood on the middle rope & suplexed Penta from inside the ring through a table on the floor. Penta finally took over with an insane Canadian destroyer off the top through a table then set up 6 chairs so he could stand on them & hit his package piledriver. Penta then "broke" both of Cage's arms & stomped his head into a concrete block to finally complete his 4th defense. ***1/4

No Mas Match: XO Lishus vs. Jack Evans 11:15. High flying match with arm & ankle focus to satisfy the I Quit stip. Fenix vs. Aero Star 6:19. I was leery of Fenix's rudo turn, but if this lightning style match was any indication, it'll be more than fine. This was a great little high flying sprint with Fenix maintaining the same workrate & exciting offense rather than just stalling & being annoying like the heels in other promotions, but added a sadistic streak. He took out Dragon Azteca after the match, which unfortunatley lead to Azteca then dropping the title to the unskilled overactor.

Lucha Underground Title Three Way Match: Pentagon Dark vs. King Cuerno vs. Mil Muertes 6:04. Good little match that despite the brevity was able to take advantage of the strengths of all 3 performers. Martinez jumps Penta after the match, leading to his title challenge that was supposed to require a weeks notice.
Lucha Underground Title Match: Pentagon Dark vs. Marty Martinez 3:38. I was annoyed enough about Azteca losing to Marty The Meh, much less Penta. 2 matches is a big month for Marty, much less a night. Hechicero vs. Daga 19:15. It's amazing this was a lower midcard match, as it really felt like the kind of effort & seriousness that's reserved for mask or title matches. That being said, one of the reasons it stood out so much is it was Lucha Libre for people who prefer European or Japanese wrestling. There were lucha bits here and there, and really something for everyone, but it wasn't contrived or overly choreographed and dramatized. Mainly they combined leverage oriented technical wrestling early & hard hitting moves & strike exchanges later. I really liked the potential of the grappling here, and kind of wanted them to fully flesh that out rather than picking it up with some dives & suplexes, though it wound up being a well built, nicely rounded match. The intensity was good no matter what they were doing, and the fans were really responding. Hechicero did a good job of playing to the crowd without stalling the match, particularly on the outside when he suplexed Daga on the stage & started whipping him with a camera cable just to be a dick. Hechicero pulled a lot out of Daga, and Daga really stepped it up. Daga hit a Canadian destroyer & missed his corner dropkick, but he was using his speed & athleticism more for hard hitting moves such as the enzuigiri & charging lariat rather than taking too many chances. Finally, he tried a frog spash, but with a lot of help, Hechicero slowly turned it into the magia negra for the win. ***3/4
CIMA & T-Hawk vs. Soberano Jr. & Rey Horus. A mix of fast paced action & brawling where they started & finished hot & did enough to keep it entertaining in between. The frantic nature kind of made it seem like an important match even though they weren't trying for anything extraordinary. It was actually your basic Dragon Gate stuff with Strong Hearts pushing a high pace even though they were the rough housers. Horus was the star of the match, getting most of the big flying spots, with even Soberano's no touch setting up Horus's tornillo. There was a cool spot toward the end where CIMA ducked Horus' corner charge, but Horus actually leaped over him for a no touch tope con giro onto T-Hawk instead. Soberano was a little off in general, but the chemistry between these teams was quite impressive despite the lack of familiarity. ***

30 Minute Iron Man Match: Hechicero vs. Daga 21:10 of "30:00". One of the keys to booking is finding the sweet spot where the performers have enough time to tell their story without having too much time so they wind up just meandering. Their 9/8 match resembled a New Japan match in the best way, but this third match resembles New Japan at it's Gedo helmed worst, as not only did the extra 11 minutes just create a bunch of stalling, but they were so busy trying to fill all that extra time that they lost the intensity of the previous matches & never really found their lane until crunch time. They once again showed their diversity, but it seemed like they were just trying to survive the first half, and there wasn't a lot of juice or oomph until they finally got down to business. There was quite a bit of good offense to be certain, but what made their 9/16 match so good is they were pouncing on every opportunity they got, whereas today most of the escapes led to a restart when they were good and ready. The match was a lot more the sum of the highlights, whereas the others had a sweep to them where it didn't so much matter what they were doing because they were always struggling; they had that sense of urgency & were pouring their heart into whatever they were trying. Part of the problem here is while the other two were professionally shot, this was a long shot handheld & had really bad editing that seemed to leave in the dead time but cut some of the matwork, which was a strength in their previous encounters & clearly a big focal point here, & the brawling from the ring to the stage & back. Some of the emotion was definitely lost to the footage we have to work with, but certainly they also weren't going as hard or maintaining near the workrate. The camera does pick up that the time started counting down long before the opening bell actually rang, so the match was actually something like 28:17. One thing that hurt the match for me is in a lot of ways an iron man match is the one that requires the most desperation given it's not a push to a single fall, it's defending that fall until time expires & when you can't, finding a way to regroup & score another. Hechicero was the one in that role, scoring the 1st & 3rd falls. Given he's the rudo, it obviously would have worked a lot better if he was the one trying to stall out his lead while Daga was theoretically always trying to go, rather than neither showing desperation & both taking turns arguing with the ref & whatnot, but that wasn't the story they told. The falls were even for most of the match with Hechicero scoring the 1st about 13 minutes in & not scoring what would be the deciding fall until there was about 45 something seconds left. This was a lot more strike oriented than the previous encounter, and they did do a good job of both turning up the heat down the stretch as they fought to get their second fall, selling the fatigue and wear & tear well while pushing through it. The final 1/4 was at the level of their other matches with the ref seeing Hechicero kick out of the frog splash this time & a big exchange of released German suplexes before Hechicero got his 2nd fall. Daga had Hechicero trapped in a headscissors working the arm for something of keylock for the final 20 seconds, but Hechicero sucked it up & time expired before Daga was able to even the match. Even if this is the least of their matches, it's amazing how good Daga is when actually given a chance to do a real match as opposed to on Lucha Underground where he's involed in some 7 minute 6 man so they can spare 2 minutes for Jack Swagger to give his same old terrible robotic cartoon performance. ***1/4

Bandido & Flamita vs. Jay Briscoe & Mark Briscoe. Some great flying from Bandido & Flamita, particularly Flamita flipping Bandido for a standing phoenix splash. Basically a match where Briscoes are doing their thing a lot & it doesn't necessarily mesh with the opponents style though. Mostly entertaining still, but more a sum of the parts.

La Jarochita & Marcela & Princesa Sugehit vs. Dalys la Caribena & Metalica & Reyna Isis 11:16 [5:53, 2:33, 2:50]
Angel de Oro & Audaz & Niebla Roja vs. Felino & Negro Casas & Mephisto 11:20 [3:55, 4:38, 2:47]. A slightly better version of the usual interesting undercard 6 man because it finished stronger. Oro supplied the bulk of the cool flying, but Audaz came on late. They were trying, but it never clicked & turned into something beyond the individual high spots.
El Cuatrero & Forastero & Sanson vs. Atlantis & El Soberano Jr. & Mistico 14:21 [6:11, 4:11, 3:59]. Atlantis needed to be on the card somewhere, but this was not the place for him. This was a match for the young that was about speed & athleticism, and he just slowed that down. Nonetheless, it was the highlight of the undercard. Mistico was on here, and it was Soberano that had an unfortunate slip, but he was still not surprisingly the showstealer overall. What elevates the match above the usual fare is The Dynamite Blood are not only way more interesting than their famous father & uncles ever were, they're actually highly athletic rudos with some good offense. They're way too similar outfits make them seem even more interchangeable than their triple teaming & mirroring each other, but even if you might forget which one is in the ring, that's partly becauase you can't really go wrong with any of them. They had a particularly good showing in the 2nd despite ultimately dropping that fall. Forestero hit a cool quadruple jump tope con giro in the 3rd & Soberano did tornillo's in & out of the ring. I liked Mistico breaking up LSD's pose on Atlantis with a swandive Frankensteiner. Sanson got a big pop for scoring the pin on Mistico with his Poder Dinamita (torture rack powerbomb) off the 2nd. ***
CMLL World Trios Title: Euforia & Gran Guerrero & Ultimo Guerrero vs. Ciber The Main Man & Sharlie Rockstar & The Chrizh 11:31 [5:23, 3:22, 2:46]
King Phoenix & Penta El Zero M & Diamante Azul vs. Caristico & El Hijo de LA Park & LA Park 18:51 [5:53, 5:41, 7:17]. They overcame the awkward pairings with fantastic effort to make this one stand out as a special match. Though the match wasn't abnormally long, they did a whole lot more in the early portions of the falls than you'd normally see. By making it a perpetual motion contest that was overloaded with big moments - seemingly almost everything that the non Parks did would at least come close to qualifying and they had a couple moments as well - you kept feeling the fall must be about to end. Mostly it was Penta, Fenix, & the artist formerly known as Mistico & 5 other names that made it work with so many spectacular moves & some flashy sequences. Park is one of the few guys from the 90's AAA boom that can still go, but this really wasn't the match for him. His brawl with Penta in MLW was pretty good because Penta can shift into that mode & have an effective match that's simply in that style, but this was more one guy stalling the propulsion by using his belt after the typical high flying first fall. It did push Caristico to use his kicks, but they didn't look that good, and regardless that's not where you want him to be. This portion of the 2nd fall aside, the action was pretty fantastic. The big spot of the 2nd fall was Azul doing a windsprint lariat off the ramp then Fenix & Penta standing on the top with Fenix Frankensteinering Penta to the floor so Penta essentially hit a Hokuto style dive, but both slipped off the ropes & had to reset while Caristico & Jr stood there twiddling their thumbs. There weren't any other botched spots, but the chemistry & timing weren't always spot on, and Park Jr. should never try to mirror Fenix. Jr. hit a plancha into the front row & Azul had his moments, but while Azul is a quality worker, these two were basically afterthoughts that were filling out the teams. Hopefully a singles match between Fenix & Caristico is forthcoming. ***1/2
Hair vs. Hair: El Barbaro Cavernario & Rush vs. Matt Taven & Volador Jr. 22:56 [3:54, 2:54, 16:08]. This wasn't the match that the fans thought they were going to see when tickets went on sale - Park vs. Rush Mask vs. Hair - though it's a far better actual wrestling match with top workers in Park's nephew Volador & Cavernario instead. Though Volador is a reasonable substitute for Park name wise, he's a still in his prime longtime main eventer rather than a decades past it one, stylistically they are oil & vinegar whereas Park & Rush mesh better because they'd just do a brawl. Volador wasn't as over tonight because he wasn't Park, while Cavernario, though way over, & Taven, who the fans were more indifferent toward, were more filling out the match. I could care less about Rush/Park, but at least that would have allowed Volador to do his thing elsewhere. Instead we had Rush doing his shtick in the 1st 2 falls, stalking around with some middling brawling when he got around to it amidst endless preening & attempts to rile up the crowd, and it was cramping Volador's perpetual motion style something mighty. Cavernario is perfect for what Volador delivers, but he was caught between styles as he did his big body press off the video wall early on & some of the usual sprinting when he was off on his own, but the 2nd fall was mostly uninspired double teaming with Rush when Rush wasn't laying on his side. Volador never puts too much stock in the 1st 2 falls, generally opting to get them over & then essentially do a long one fall match, and the third fall did deliver the way a big Volador match always does, especially when he was in with Cavernario. These two started the fall with a classic super speed Volador sequence, and it was really beautiful anytime they were paired, but the match was a lot more single spots then well timed speedy lucha. Taven avoided lucha sequences when he could, opting to just move from one big move to the next. I would have preferred a guy that could actually work more with Cavernario instead of just do his own thing, but Taven gave a big effort & this style worked well with Rush, who just wants to stop all the time anyway. Overall, the 3rd fall was mostly highlights with Taven pulling some stuff out of Rush, who detracted from this portion as little as one could hope, & being a lot more of a plus than a minus. The match didn't really flow outside of a few Volador/Cavernario sequences, but guys were doing 2 dives just in the 3rd fall, and pulling out all the big flashy stunts. This wasn't a classic for the art of Lucha with great timing, chemistry, & well developed sequences, but rather guys making a less than ideal matchup into a big show main event just doing more. Unfortunately, the finish was terrible with Taven hitting Volador with a boomerang enzuigiri for no reason then Rush getting the win with a piledriver. Taven didn't really decide whether or not this was a heel turn, then took off, but Volador dragged him back so he couldn't escape the shaming. ***1/4
Lady Maravilla vs. Keyra. It's normally advisable to avoid Mexican women's matches, but these two are still in their early 20's and are actually quality workers. They can dish out & take a lot of punishment, and are also good athletes. This was a short match, but was fun while it lasted.
Angel o Demonio & Carta Brava Jr. & Corsario Negro Jr. vs. Drako & Fantasma de la Opera & Ovett. Bloody brawl with light tubes & tables.
Alas de Acero vs. Aramis vs. Iron Kid vs. Belial vs. Impulso. Scheduled as a trios match, but turned into a 5 way when Dragon Bane couldn't wrestle. There was a lot of indecision, but this was a wild flying stuntfest. I mean, it's not every day you see a Spanish fly off the top to the floor. Not exactly fluid or cleanly performed enough to be a good match, but you had to appreciate the effort.
Mike Segura & Templario vs. Bobby Sharp & Fly Star. Maybe 6 minutes long, so they basically just did an extended finishing sequences throwing out all their big moves.
Octagon & Satanico vs. Demus & Pirata Morgan
Daga vs. Hechicero. If their previous match had all the elements, this rematch is where they put them all together. All the styles they were showing on 9/8 were impressive individually, but they incorporated them better here, doing very active matwork that would lead into brief exchanges or big moves when someone made it back to his feet. This was less of a New Japan looking match than the others, using more WOS & Lucha but all with a keener eye on realism. I mean, it was less realistic than their previous in terms of the offense they actually used, but they did a great job of knowing what to use when, so it came off as the most believable of the three even though it was actually the most flashy by a wide margin. Daga had trouble finding openings for his higher risk moves in the previous match, but this time he was more aggressive, and made Hechicero keep coming up with answers whether they were simple such as getting back in the ring before Daga could dive at him or more surprising such as picking the leg on the leapfrog ala Sabre. Hechicero had the edge once he got it to the ground, but Daga was rolling around for all he was worth to alleviate the pressure & work his way out of the submissions. The match always seemed to be on Hechicero's terms, and he did as much flying and big moves as Daga because he kept taking the initiative & putting Daga on the defensive. There was a lot less striking this time, but they replaced that with opportunistic high spots, which is a plus in my book. There was a great spot where Daga had the right arm & had transitioned to working for an armbar when his crossface had failed, but Hechicero just deadlifted him into something of a backdrop. The match just kept getting better & better, and perhaps could have been a great match if it had a real finish. I could have lived with Daga stopping Hechicero's superplex by knocking him off the top & hitting his frog splash for the win even though Hechicero seemed to have a lot left, but them using this as the finish with the ref somehow missing that Hechicero obviously kicked out was the usual real turn off. Still a hell of a match though, and one of the reasons it was their best is Daga was up to Hechicero's level & really adding a lot even though he was the follower. ****

S4 E16 9/26/18 Kill Mil
The Monster Matanza Cueto vs. Jack Evans 1:21
Lucha Underground Trios Title Match: Daga & Jeremiah Crane & Kobra Moon vs. Ivelisse & Joey Ryan & XO Lishus 5:23
Handicap Nunchuck Match: Jake Strong vs. Aero Star & Drago 8:27. Aero Star did a balcony dive.
Lucha Underground Title #1 Contendership Four Way Match: Pentagon Dark vs. Dragon Azteca Jr. vs. King Cuerno vs. Mil Muertes 5:19. Azteca saves Melissa from Fenix with a tope con giro but then eliminates himself from the match battling Fenix to the back.
S4 E17 10/3/18 The Moth vs. The Butterfly
Bunny & Paul London & The White Rabbit vs. Ivelisse & Joey Ryan & XO Lishus 5:21
Son Of Havoc vs. Killshot 6:35. Good short counter laden athletic match with Killshot evening things out unmasking Havoc to set up Cueto forcing them into a mask match.
Lucha Underground Title No Disqualification Match: Marty Martinez vs. Mariposa 9:10. I don't get what people see in this one. It was the dullest, least skilled, most generic slow motion plodding brawl of the season. Cheerleader has no push to warrant the title shot, not that Marty did to win the now meaningless strap, and it's literally just Marty bullying his "sister" to the point whatever drama there might have been was sucked out since you'd lost any belief before she finally came back with a couple deliberate chair spots. Reklusa promptly interfered, & Marty got the pin with Penta's finisher then "broke her arm" in the post match to get Penta to come out & accept a no fear match.
S4 E18 10/10/18 Spiders vs. Skeletons
The Monster Matanza Cueto vs. Taya 2:37
Tornado Match: Fenix & Mil Muertes vs. Dragon Azteca Jr. & The Mack 9:51. Good short spotfest setting up the respective singles matches for the season finale. Fenix/Azteca was not surprisingly the best, but all the pairings were quite good & I suppose what made the match was how well the power guys worked well with the speed guys because there were no shifts from style to style, it was all fireworks and never slowed down. Mack's offense bridges the gap anyway, so while Muertes is the only true outlier, he is usually willing to take as much as he gives in the bigger matches, and is a lot better base for flying than he looks like he'd be. I liked the tornado match better than a 4 way because they could still do the spots that required 3 or 4 wrestlers, but could also just have 1 on 1 without the other 2 guys lying on the outside picking their noses until their next turn. I also liked that although Fenix & Mil have been enemies for years & are one of the most unlikely pairings in Lucha Underground, they didn't use the moldy old script where where something backfired & they either turned on one another or caused their old rival to get pinned. Fenix is the most spectacular, but the highlights were pretty much everything. The favorites Fenix & Mil scored simultaneous pins on their rivals, which seems to point to an upset or two at Ultimo Lucha Cuatro. ***
Ricky Mundo vs. Famous B 1:33
Pentagon Dark vs. Reklusa 9:43. This companion to last week's Marty vs. Mariposa followed the same bad script where the woman just got her ass kicked the whole time. I can midly recommend this one though because the wrestling was maybe an 8/10 as opposed to a 2/10. Also, though Chelsea was only treated as a grade above jobber, she gave a far better than expected performance, hitting really impressive moves when she actually got to do something with a rana off the top to the floor, a tope into a swinging DDT, and a Canadian destroyer & selling well the rest of the time. Penta didn't go easy on her in the least, while he seemed to be toying with her a bit to draw out Marty, mostly drilling her with hellacious hamstring kicks, eventually he was ready to put her away & she kicked out even after the package piledriver on the apron. Penta changed his mind about breaking Reklusa's arm, instead dumping a bag of thumbtacks & setting her up for the piledriver, but Marty came out & used a barbed wire bat on him & they went to black with him supposedly lighting Pentagon on fire. Overall, this match is way overrated, but at the same time a lot better than it had the right to be given the lack of time and more importantly that it was an ill conceived throwaway to hokily advance the main angle. ***

Seven Man Battle Royal: Jake Strong vs. Aero Star vs. Big Bad Steve vs. Dante Fox vs. Hernandez vs. King Cuerno vs. PJ Black 3:12
The Mack vs. Killshot 2:49
Jake Strong vs. Johnny Mundo 13:08. Striker & Vampiro almost seemed embarrassed by this nonsensical Strong push with Striker describing him as a bit lumbering & Vampiro giving every advantage to Mundo. The difference in both skill & charisma was just so striking, and the result was even more nonsensical given Strong had already beaten 6 guys earlier. Mundo somehow pulled something of a match out of Strong, hitting some nice athletic counters & Ligerbombing him on the floor. Strong finally did some selling though, and that's even more comical than the rest of his game. He could only be more cartoonish if they put a bubble that said "fee-fi-fo-fum" up when he ran the ropes.
S4 E20 10/24/18 Seven To Survive
Gift Of The Gods Title Seven To Survive Elimination Match: Jake Strong vs. Aero Star vs. Big Bad Steve vs. Dante Fox vs. Hernandez vs. King Cuerno vs. PJ Black. Signal breaks up for about a minute early in the match. Strong ran over all these guys in 3 minutes last week, so now we need to see him do it again in 30? Luckily everyone isn't in the ring at once, so Fox and to a lesser extent Aero & Cuerno get opportunities to shine this time. Aerostar did a massive plancha "30 feet" according to Vampiro off a fork lift. Fox did a somersault off the balcony. Fox was tearing the house down with his flying, but doing a swanton onto the opponent's knees doesn't seem like a great idea for longevity. He was really over though, so, of course, he not only submitted to the corny ankle lock, they then had Strong reapply it after the match & added some Z movie sound effects to convey he broke the ankle this time & was thus done for the season.
S4 E21 10/31/18 Ultima Lucha Cuatro Part 1
Lucha Underground Trios Title Three Way Elimination Tornado Rules Match: Daga & Jeremiah Snake & Kobra Moon vs. Ivelisse & Sammy Guevara & XO Lishus vs. El Bunny & Paul London & The White Rabbit. Sammy gave Moon a Spanish fly off the balcony onto the others.
Taya Mundo vs. Ricky Mundo 4:04
Mask vs. Mask Match: Son Of Havoc vs. Killshot 14:07. They had some great athletic counter laden sequences going in their all too brief encounter on episode 17, and I was hoping they'd expand upon that here. While they showed a little of that here, instead they did a 14 minute version of the 30 minute New Japan epic, doing a handful of great stunts and mostly padding the rest with laying around & meandering. The highlights were Havoc putting Killshot through a table with an insane balcony splash, doing an avalanche style Death Valley bomb, and winning with a shooting star press onto the gurney after taking a superplex onto it.
2/3 Falls: Fenix vs. Dragon Azteca Jr. 13:45 [2:20, 1:41, 9:45]. This was the match on Ultimo Lucha Cuatro I was really looking forward to because Azteca has looked good all season as a guy who has random highlights in short matches, but hasn't really had the opportunity to have a complete match, and Fenix should be a great opponent for him to excel with. It failed to meet the lofty expectations, but it was still a good match, the best on a show that had a ton of potential but grew lamer & lamer as they continually avoided doing lucha & aspired to be a dumbed down version of CZW. The action got off to a great start with the fast paced, back & forth action we were expecting from these guys. I'm not sure if they edited some of the first two falls because while blowing through them & having a long 3rd fall is hardly uncommon, there was a lot of time after the 2nd with Antonio Cueto hobbling out & turning it into a falls count anywhere match, but instead of picking things up for the stunning conclusion, they were still half dead & the pace was quartered, though again that seemed to be a theme of all the hardcore action, with the extra time these matches got mostly being used to plod after weapons or contemplate using them. The first 2 falls were the closest thing we saw all night to pure lucha athleticism, but the 3rd was a hardcore brawl with the style of the old Fenix giving way to that of the new dark Fenix, though the match actually would have worked better if that was a legit storyline rather than an obvious observation. Fenix starting by cracking Azteca with a chair, and it quickly devolved into the same type of inaction that marred Havoc/Killshot where they just focused on setting up a few big spots & didn't do a whole lot in between, though this was more manipulating the weapons than purely meandering. Azteca gave up wanting to be a nice guy really quickly, and the signature spot saw him Frankensteiner Fenix off the bleachers guard rail through a table. From here they kept trying to break tables, with Fenix failing by overshooting his swanton to the floor a little too much, but Dragon succeeding with a super victory roll that really seemed a lot more impressive due to the inclusion of the prop. Granted that should have just been the finish, but they always have to do their hamfisted melodramatic angles, so the overselling hit it's peak when Azteca then eventually dragged a chair out from under the ring, climbed back in & slammed it into the ring 3 times with Fenix still down then did some windups. A minute had gone by before the lame finish where Melissa tried to stop the chair shot by convincing Azteca they're still friends & the bad Fenix isn't really him only to have Fenix finally get up 30 seconds later & blindside Azteca with a chair then hit a typically unimpressive spear (which looked great compared to Muertes') through a table & finish with the blackbird driver. I thought Azteca really delivered here, but this was the first match where Fenix was hampered by trying to figure out what his new identity entails. ***
Death Match: The Mack vs. Mil Muertes 12:54. Mack wasn't scared of Muertes anymore, which was about the only explanation for this matchup now being really competitive after Muertes had been fairly dominant in the haunted house match on episode 11. His fearlessness was good for the audience though, as it turned an underachieving match into an overachieving one. Muertes brought out a second casket early on, hitting an X factor on it. Mack was using his speed & technique early, advantages he doesn't have over many guys in this league since he's one of the few heavyweights, even if quite an athletic one, but things changed when he opened the casket, which turned out to be filled with weapons. I think teasing big moves & never actually hitting them is a good thing, maybe the outcome would have changed if they managed to pull off this or that big hold, but introducing weapons they clearly aren't going to use properly (nothing was more nonsensical than Tiger Jeet Singh only doing sword spots but having to use the handle only turning a lengthy weapon into a bad version of brass knuckles) because someone would be mutilated or killed, in this case an axe, is just an annoying distraction from all the good & interesting things they are or could be doing. Things degenerated quickly with Mil carving Mack up with an ice pick on Mack & Mack coming back with a coast to coast dropkick with a can on Mil that only reached with one foot. It was good that they got this stuff out of the way in the mid stages then, when both were good & bloody, were able to make their way back to the actual wrestling match this started out as. Mack survived a flatliner then turned the match countering the chokeslam with his stunner. Mil survived another stunner, so Mack broke a brick on his head, flipped him off, then pinned him with the 3rd stunner. Though Muertes won earlier in the season, it was still surprising to see Mack finally get a signature win in Lucha Underground here, especially since he'd made Mil look mortal throughout. Mack did a good job of making Mil look good though, so he deserved it, but apart from this having a much better finish, Fenix/Azteca was a better actual wrestling match. ***
Johnny Mundo vs. The Monster Matanza Cueto 11:55. I can't remember the last time I witnessed such cheesiness. Matanza came out in an "ancient sacrificial headdress" that was a nice change from his usual Jason wannabe look. It started promising as Cobb actually got to wrestle rather than just stomping the opponent, and it was basically his power moves vs. Mundo's athleticism once Mundo initially lost the gauntlet & they actually wrestled, highlighed by Cueto hitting a big top rope released German where he flipped Mundo onto his stomach. The problem was the match was built around the gauntlet rather than actual wrestling, and this whole Dungeon of Dumb level silliness totally overwhelmed what could have been a match, turning it into Mundo chasing the gauntlet then playing superhero once he finally got it back.
Lucha Underground Title Cero Miedo Match: Marty Martinez vs. Pentagon Dark 12:31. When you're champion isn't a luchador, or hell even a wrestler, you can't expect much. If your idea of the big season finale is something at the level of Johnny Grunge, well he at least had some kind of workrate and an actual quality partner plus two opponents to mask him... This really wasn't even a wrestling match, it was just swing a chair, stand around, swing a barbed wire bat, stand around, stand around faking lighting Penta on fire to further annoy the people who were annoyed by the stupid axe earlier, and so on. Penta is a great wrestler, but he needs something to work with, and with Marty, he had to dumb the skill down so low it didn't even register. It wasn't like there was drama to make up for it, there was literally nothing going on at any level beyond pure carnage with Moth dripping blood within 30 seconds, and Pentagon not being too far behind. If you removed any sense of actual action taking place as well as all the good aspects of Penta vs. Callihan 7/22/18, which was a quality hardcore match though ridiculously overrated, you might have something like this nonsense that short of one table bump even Tiger Jeet Singh, Sheik, or Abdullah could probably have managed with Penta if they were still all alive & under 70. The pinnacle of the lameness came when Marty contrived to hit himself with the barbed wire bat boomeranging back off the top rope when Penta avoided.
Lucha Underground Title Match: Pentagon Dark vs. Jake Strong 0:43. The only bright side of the poor garbage match that preceeded this is the title was finally returned to a real luchador. Just to put the final nail in the coffin of this season, and perhaps the promotion, Vince Russo seemingly concocted this nonsense that immediately turned the already badly tarnished belt into the WWE Hardcore Title, leaving us with the rancid taste of virtually the most useless robot in the league holding the strap, potentially for all eternity.
