WKA World Super Heavyweight Title: Kevin Rosier vs. Don "Nakaya" Neilsen R6 1:05. This was the sort of comically bad no technique fighting you'd see in one of those Z grade actioners that appears to have been made by people who never witnessed a real fight, yet ironically much of Rosier's unskilled brawling was rather effective, especially since the referee didn't seem willing to enforce any rules that may have existed. Neilsen was known for being an aggressive fighter with suspect defense, so by not allowing him any time or space, Rosier really negated him. Rosier was the much bigger man even though he was somewhat in shape compared to his later years, and would just bull rush Neilson then overwhelm him with an endless barrage of short hooks as well as just using his weight to push him around, getting his rests when Neilson went down. And boy, that was often, as Neilsen slipped more than a 3 year old learning to skate. The slipping was so out of hand, I wanted a close up of the ring to make sure there wasn't a sheet of ice that I was missing. Neilsen kept going down every time he threw a kick or did anything that required the most rudimentary balance, and Yamazaki, Maeda, Takada, who were in attendance, were probably thinking their worked wins over him weren't going to be worth as much if this kept up while Kaman was thinking the time to fight this guy was now. The 2 minute rounds were a huge advantage for Rosier, who will never be confused with being a cardio king, but by the 3rd he'd slowed down considerably & Neilsen was finally able to go on the offensive from time to time. Use his kicks to keep Rosier back was an effective (at least if Neilsen somehow managed to stay on his feet) technique he underused. Rosier's nose was busted open from a high kick, which Rosier responded to with a lion's roar expression, but even in a good round Neilsen was hitting the canvas maybe 10 times. You could see Rosier didn't even bother putting impact on his low kick, he knew literally as soon as he touched Neilsen he'd fall, so it almost seemed pointless. It was hilarious seeing Neilsen argue when the ref actually ruled one of his endless tumbles a knockdown, as though it was his birthright to just spend half the fight on the canvas. Somehow though, he mostly managed to stay on his feet after this. I guess the ice must have thawed quickly. Neilsen also argued his low blow was too the thigh, which I suppose was accurate to the extent that it finished there after ricocheting off the cup. Nielsen did have several legitimate gripes as Rosier was pretty much doing whatever he wanted. For instace, he punched Neilsen in the face when he was laying on his side, which was very obviously premeditated in that Rosier literally set up a combo where he'd sweep the leg & follow with the punch when Neilsen had slipped, as always. This was the beginning of the end as Rosier dropped Neilsen with a right then when Neilsen got up, Rosier literally grabbed him & threw him into the ropes. Neilsen ended up hung on the ropes with his back to Rosier, and Rosier nailed him in the face with a big hook Neilsen couldn't see coming. This sequence had to have been illegal in a handful of ways, including that the ref was trying to get Rosier to break when he threw the punch, but somehow rather than a foul it was a TKO win for Rosier.

Takahiro Shimizu vs. Ruben Bardarez
WKA World Heavyweight Title Match: Maurice Smith vs. Kevin Rosier R2 1:42. Smith was a very cerebral fighter who knew how to exploit the opponents advantages & how to defend himself first so he could win later. He knew exactly what Rosier was going to do, and how to render Rosier's tactics ineffective. Smith relied on his movement until Rosier cut him off, then his block because Rosier only headhunted. He'd withstand the barrage without taking any clean punches then look to land a big high kick when Rosier was waddling out of the pocket, flattening Rosier with this on the second attempt. From this point, Rosier was compromised & wasn't just plowing forward, so Smith could work on taking his movement away with massive low kicks. Smith used side kicks he didn't seem to care whether he landed to create space to destroy the leg, and when I say destroy, Rosier was damaged enough with each one Smith landed that they were ruled knockdowns. Though Rosier is the much bigger fighter, and held the super heavyweight title while Smith held the heavyweight title, Smith's shots were so much cleaner & more precise that the larger man was the one whose body was giving out immediately & often. Rosier is the definition of lumbering to start, but after the 2nd low kick knockdown he's was also hobbling the rest of the fight. All this hoblumbering didn't stop Rosier from trying to throw some kind of ill advised switch kick twice in a row, with Rosier faking only himself & going tumbling to the ground when Smith matadored him in the corner. At this point, Smith knew he had Rosier, and it's just pick your poison for Rosier, as Smith was either going for the slow kill incapacitating the injured leg or the fast one with the high kick. Rosier wound up crumbling when he tried to throw his own low kick with the injured leg, and Smith checked it. Rosier tried to gut it out, but couldn't really put pressure on the front of the ankle/top of the foot, so Smith went in for the kill & Rosier lost from not being able to move well enough to defend before Smith really got a killshot in. Just a beautiful performance by Mo, taking no damage & hurting Rosier every time he connected.

Featherweight Next Challenger Decision Tournament: Takashi Nakajima vs. Michiaki Yamazaki. Takashi Nakajima vs. Michiaki Yamazaki R3. This fight was pretty wild! Nakajima had the height advantage, and appeared to be much more skilled and diverse as well. He was landing naked high kicks from the outside, so Yamazaki just started rushing in, trying to clinch. Nakajima was much more versed in a muay thai though, and would drop down the vaunted 12 -6 elbow, Yamazaki was probably lucky to escape with his life! There was an amazing sequence where Nakajima did a right high kick into a right straight, hit a jumping knee after backing Yamazaki into the ropes, dropped an elbow to the back of his head, which literally caused Yamazaki to run away to the other side of the ring, but Nakajima ran at him and hit a jumping high kick. Though this was essentially a job rematch, Yamazaki did have a few good punch flurries on the inside, but his head was a stationary target even when Nakajima wasn't using the clinch blasts him with knees. When Yamazaki tried to back Nakajima into the corner to start the third, Nakajima just worked him over with knees and elbows, buckling him with a knee to the midsection then dropping the elbow down on his head for a knockdown. Nakajima obediently got another knockdown with clinch knees, and the Ref wisely waived it off even though Yamazaki did make it up. Good match.

AJK Welterweight Title: Takatora Funaki vs. Keizo Kojima R@
Takahiro Shimizu vs. Atsushi Tateshima 3R. Clearly a battle of styles, with Tateshima coming forward and blasting Shimizu with debilitating low kicks, while Shimizu tried to time him and answer with powerful hooks. The problem for Shimizu is his lead leg was compromised literally within seconds, and he spent most of the fight hopping backwards on the good leg like a crippled kangaroo, which really limited his punching power. Shimizu's leg gave out after a low kick halfway through the first round, and while the match was entertaining, you already felt the writing was on the wall. That being said, Shimizu was clearly the better boxer, and managed to have a good second round after he gets uppercut going to make this a fight, despite largely fighting without his left leg. In the third round, the inevitable finally happened, Shimizu's leg gave out from a low kick, and you could tell he wasn't getting up anytime soon. Good match.
