Abdullah The Butcher & Kamala II vs. Stan Hansen & Danny Spivey 2:50

Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi vs. Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue & Masa Fuchi 20:27 shown. Kawada was the major performer here, wrestling with a great deal of confidence. He put the heat on himself vs. Jumbo rather than Misawa, who was generally a non factor, injuring Jumbo's neck by blindsiding him with a cheapshot lariat as he was exiting the ring. Jumbo eventually got fed up with Kawada trying to be his equal and believing he was ready to take the man down, slamming Kawada on the floor and using a chair on him. Fuchi tried to calm Jumbo down, but Jumbo didn't feel he was going to far, and actually pushed his partner away and continued to chair Kawada. Kawada had good battles with Taue as well, but the other big rivalry was Kikuchi vs. Fuchi. Kikuchi was begging to be put in his place as always, and Fuchi was in a particularly malevolent mood today, slamming Kikuchi's bad elbow into the guard rail a few times to reinjure it and throwing some big nasty punches. ***3/4

3/24/91 '91 Champion Carnival Opening taped 3/23/91 Tokyo Korakuen Hall

'91 Champion Carnival League Match: Stan Hansen vs. Dynamite Kid 7:00 shown

'91 Champion Carnival B Block League Match: Toshiaki Kawada vs. Danny Kroffat 9:25 shown. Shockingly lackluster singles match between the two rivals who delivered so many excellent tag matches. There just wasn't much action here, as Kawada grounded Kroffat by working his left leg. The match told a nice story, but that story didn't make for a match that delivered the sort of excitement that we loved from these two. Kroffat focused on martial arts kicks when he was on his feet, but perhaps as a way to sell the bad leg, was moving a bit clumsily. You never felt that Kroffat could win, and what was worse is he just didn't have much opportunity to showcase his skills. **1/2 range

Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue & Masa Fuchi vs. Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi 13:53 shown. Great story match with Jumbo's team hating on Misawa's team to the point of injury, and just hurting someone new as soon as they tried to bail out their maimed friend. The heat and intensity were absolutely fantastic. It started with Fuchi hobbling Kobashi with a kneebreaker on the rail and chair, and he and Jumbo continued to abuse the knee until Kikuchi tried to bail Kobashi out. Kikuchi's back was abused for his trouble, including Taue slamming him on the outside. After getting beat on for a while, Kikuchi nearly inched his way over to tag Misawa, but just as he was about to do so Taue came in and knocked Misawa off the apron with a diving tackle, causing Misawa to tweak his knee on the landing. With the entirety of Misawa's team injured, it wasn't looking good, but Misawa wasn't in that bad of shape after all, and finally made the hot tag. He couldn't wait to knock Fuchi down so he could blitz Taue in the corner, bloodying him with a barrage of fierce elbows. Now it was Jumbo trying to bail his teammate out, and getting dismissed for his troubles. The match kicked into high gear with Misawa vs. Taue, and had fantastic action until the finish with everyone sprinting and throwing bombs with ill intent. Kobashi, Kikuchi, Fuchi, everyone was making impressive contributions, but for once it was Misawa who was stealing the show by being so passionate and wrestling his heart out. The crowd was just eating it all up, appreciating that they were getting the sort of effort and intensity that one would associate with a show at an arena 5 or 10 times larger. Just fantastic stuff. ****1/2

I never for a moment believed Kawada had a chance of winning this one, and it didn't help that they wrestled it as though it were enough for Kawada to be competitive. The match started really slowly with Jumbo mainly working the knee. Kawada returned the favor for a brief segment, but the key spot was Jumbo putting Kawada through the table with a kneebreaker. The match picked up when Kawada finally got off the mat and began to get his kicking game going only to have Jumbo level him with a lariat. There was a nifty spot where Kawada returned the favor by stopping a second lariat by laying Jumbo out with a ganmengiri, but clevel spots were all too rare. It came off more as a house show match with disappointing effort and intensity and the outcome never being in doubt making them decide not to bother that much with psychology or drama. These two have enough talent that it couldn't be all that bad, but because of that should never deliver something so instantly forgettable. ***1/4

Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Mitsuharu Misawa 23:17. A really nice match, but as the rubber match in a program that was absolutely on fire week in and week out in tags, I was expecting a whole lot more, especially with Misawa now firmly established as the #2 wrestler in the promotion. The live show 15,960, which was the promotions all-time record at Budokan at the time. The crowd absolutely did their job, with incredible heat during the pre and post match, and lots of Misawa chants throughout, but it didn't have the sustained heat during the match that their 1990 matches did, and that falls squarely on the shoulders of the wrestlers. This match should have showed that Misawa was Jumbo's peer, but while it was even enough early on, one could never shake the feeling that Jumbo was in total control and dictating everything in his methodical pace. Misawa getting the best of Jumbo from time to time may have shown some semblance of advancement if you wanted to reach, but as a whole the match seemed a big step back because he was just treading Jumbo's water, if not struggling to keep his head above. There were explosive moments throughout to keep the intensity and pop the crowd, and good rivalry moments, but for the most part they saved all the action for the final third, which was great. The match didn't tell much of a story, and if it had a story, it was the wrong one. It doesn't take much to see this as extremely defeatist for Misawa, as what thin story there was centered on him countering the backdrop that always thwarts his hopes, and, if we want to really stretch things, maybe getting lucky again as he did on 6/8/90. There were huge pops for Misawa shifting his weight to counter the backdrop by landing on top, but then Jumbo immediately squashed his hopes by hitting a backdrop into the turnbuckle that wasn't put over like it should have been. Misawa's best chance, perhaps, was turning a powerbomb into a huracanrana, which tells you all you need to know about his chances of winning this match, and especially of supplanting Jumbo any time soon. Jumbo finally hit the backdrop, but was too shaken up to cover. Misawa fired back with an elbow, but Jumbo hit a second backdrop and still couldn't cover. This time Misawa was too groggy to offer any counter fire, leaving him prone to be polished off by the third backdrop. This would have been a nice finish for Jumbo vs. Kobashi, as Kobashi had done nothing in singles to establish himself as a threat to defeat Jumbo, but for Misawa to never have Jumbo in trouble just didn't make sense. ****

Toshiaki Kawada vs. Akira Taue 15:53. This match may have been overlooked because Taue wasn't the greatest wrestler in 1991, so they had better and more famous matches later on when he improved, and it's a rare screw job finish, but those things aside, they poured their heart and soul into delivering the best and most dramatic big match they could. It's just a fantastic effort from both men, using a focused attack from each - Kawada attacking Taue's arm and Taue attacking Kawada's knee - as the base but surrounding it with a lot of one upsmanship and opportunistic big moves. The intensity, heat, and hatred were awesome, and they just did a great job of not getting bogged down by staying married to their base, but - at the same time - mixing it up and keeping it fierce and exciting without straying to far from it. Kawada started off technically working the arm, but Taue upped the anty with heavy hitting so Kawada cut Taue's forehead with kicks then used punches and chops to open the cut, which garnered support for Taue. Taue came back stopping Kawada's suplex on the floor with one of his own, and hit a kneebreaker on the guard rail to injure the knee. Kawada had to roll Taue's figure 4 to the floor to escape, so Taue made him pay with a powerbomb on the outside. There was a great spot where Kawada turned Taue's nodowa otoshi into a wakigatame. Kawada couldn't pin Taue with his powerbomb though, so thirsting for revenge, he once again made the mistake of taking it to the outside, and once got what he deserved, this time paying in the biggest way. This time Taue stopped his attempt to even the powerbomb on the floor score, and hit his golden arm bomber, which killed Kawada dead! Taue had never defeated Kawada in a singles match before, so getting the count out wasn't a horrible thing for him, but they were smart to have him just barely beating the count so it didn't come off as his choice to be cheap, but rather the obvious decision not to lose as well. Kawada was down for several minutes, and finally had to be stretchered off, which in a way is more of a victory than any pinfall could have been. ****1/2

World Tag Title Match: Terry Gordy & Steve Williams vs. Stan Hansen & Danny Spivey 14:42 of 20:40. Don't confuse this match with their memorable 4/19/90 match. The crowd is hot and Hansen bleeds in both, but that's about where the similarities end. This lacked the stiffness, intensity, build, great near falls, drama, and quality performances by Gordy & Williams. Hansen is cut early and half the match seems to be Gordy punching the cut. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but Hansen never does anything that requires any ability here, and Gordy also just looks like a lumbering brawler. What makes the match is Spivey, who is at his absolute best here. He's the only one who shows anything even resembling a move set, but luckily his offense is really good here and goes a long way toward making the match. Williams is pretty good as well, but it's not one of his more exciting performances to be certain. They work well together, but it all leads to one of Hansen's corniest finishes where Hansen stops Williams from pinning Spivey after the Oklahoma stampede, but Gordy gets Hansen out of the ring. 30 seconds later, with Spivey still dead and Williams somehow unable to progress, Hansen gets free from Gordy, sneaks in, and hits the western lariat for the win (though Spivey is still the legal man). A nice match, but I'm not even sure if it'd be a classic by mid 80's AWA or Texas standards, much less 90's AJ. ***1/4

Jumbo Tsuruta & Masa Fuchi vs. Mitsuharu Misawa & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi 13:57 shown. Just a big beatdown by Jumbo's team. They injured Misawa's right arm early, and brushed off Kikuchi's attempts to save him. Kikuchi was dominated as well, and when Misawa finally made the hot tag, he reinjured his arm immediately with a diving elbow to Fuchi, allowing Jumbo to tag in andwork the arm some more. Misawa finally got pissed and decided to withstand the pain to do the damage, landing a series of elbows before tagging. The match picked up with Kikuchi's tag, but the action segment was too brief, and it lacked the intensity and psychology in the early portion to make up for it. There was nice focus, but ultimately, no real payoff as Misawa still used his elbows and, since they got their asses kicked all match, rather quickly and unconvincingly took Fuchi out with a facelock. ***1/2

Danny Kroffat & Doug Furnas vs. Tsuyoshi Kikuchi & Toshiaki Kawada 4:16 shown

Terry Gordy & Steve Williams vs. Kenta Kobashi & Mitsuharu Misawa 16:18 shown. A quality match, but I was expecting more. It had a few big moments, but as a whole was just stuck in the 80's American mode with the face stuck in the ring eternally and the heel team not beating on them in that compelling a fashion. Gordy & Doc took Misawa's leg out early. Kobashi was up to the task of going alone until Doc stuffed Gordy's powerbomb. Misawa recovered, but was too clean cut to interject himself and anytime Kobashi came close to tagging, the heel who wasn't legal would run in and club Misawa. Williams was just putting the boots to a helpless Kobashi on the floor. FINALLY, Kobashi made the tag, but Misawa still didn't really do anything as Kobashi continued to fight Williams in the ring while Misawa & Gordy went at it on the floor. The big moment came when Williams overwhelmed the weakened Kobashi then hit a diving tackle off the apron just in time to save Gordy from Misawa's Tigerdriver on the floor, and allow Gordy to instead take Misawa out with a powerbomb on the cement. ***

Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada vs. Terry Gordy & Steve Williams 16:08 shown. Kawada knows how to wrestle against each opponent. Sometimes he utilizes that for the story, adjusting what he does or doesn't do, his style and focus, and then there's matches such as this one where he has to prod the opposition to wrestle a certain style in order to get the best out of them. Misawa is content to leave Gordy to his devices, so it's the same sort of complacent, uninspired and unfocused brawling he'd do against any old stiff, whereas Kawada instills a fast pace, which forces them to actually wrestle. When they slow him down by injuring his leg, it gives focus to their brawling and submissions. Granted, Kawada is the one who makes the first hot tag, but there's an electricity to Gordy's stuff that isn't signature moves against Kawada that isn't there with Misawa, and Gordy & Doc just seem more energetic when they are in with Kawada. This may not be a classic, but it's one of the better examples of what Gordy & Williams are capable of doing, a match where they are heels but still deliver on their potential and display their skill. ***1/2

Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Toshiaki Kawada 19:05. There are far more exciting matches, but I can't think of another match that better exemplifies the beauty of simplicity. Kawada's first TC shot was everything the 4/18/91 Jumbo vs. Misawa wasn't. I criticized the Misawa match because Misawa never established any identity and simply allowed Jumbo to dictate, but Kawada succeeded in making the match all about him. Kawada may not have been the better fighter, but he wanted it more, and by forcing Jumbo to engage in a battle of wills, he had a chance because he could match Jumbo's persistence. It was a total story match almost in the vein of the early wrestler vs. striker MMA matches in that it was Kawada's control vs. Jumbo's damage, Kawada's quantity over Jumbo's quality. Kawada knew he was overmatched and couldn't just slug it out with Jumbo, so he struck only when there was little chance of return fire or he absolutely had to. His goal was to win as many minutes as posible, and that meant seizing a position where he was the only one inflicting punishment. Kawada started out as basically as possible, holding onto a headlock at all costs. When Jumbo threw him off to the floor, Kawada got right back in and reestablished control with another headlock. He progressed to the cobra twist, and a series of ground submissions. Once in a while Jumbo was able to hit a big counter, but for the most part Jumbo was only scoring during the brief portions he was able to get free and keep Kawada from grabbing him. You'd have been right not to give Kawada a snowballs chance in hell coming into the match, but as he won minute after minute, at some point his good fortune was difficult to discount. The growing urgency was coming from Jumbo, as he had to make the most of his chances at distance, to get a big blow or suplex in before Kawada outsmarted or outmaneuvered him. It may not have been Kawada's most interesting match, but it was an riveting one because there was a method to his madness, and it was something different, something unique. The crowd was really into the match, so that made up for the overabundance of submission holds, and helped the urgency and intensity of what normally would be meaningless rest or weardown holds to come across. Both men did a great job of acting, which added so much to the heat between them as well as making the match seem more credible. Kawada did some excellent counters to regain control, and the crowd was really into this, wanting to believe he had a chance and popping big anytime they got the illusion Kawada might win. Of course, Kawada didn't win, but no more could have credibly have been done to make people believe he should have. ****1/2

Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada & Kenta Kobashi vs. Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue & Masa Fuchi 48:00 of 51:32 shown. Tremendous match. Taue kept getting under Kawada's skin when Kawada wasn't in the match by doing things like knocking him off the apron to the floor. The main story was Kobashi was trapped in the ring for something like a 15 minute stretch and they just destroyed his knee. Kobashi was great at playing the young babyface roll, and, at this point, Fuchi & Jumbo were equally awesome as the grumpy old men. Thus, this had awesome heat. Fuchi was particulary vicious here, including kneebreakering Kobashi on a chair. They got a lot of near falls on Kobashi, but he refused to lose. He was mainly destroyed, but he'd always make a brief comeback only to be cut off before he could make the tag. After Kobashi finally made the hot tag, the final minutes were really fast paced and heated. The finish was perfect because of what had been going on during this match between Kawada & Taue. ****3/4
