Mezger is set to defend against Semmy Schilt on 4/18/99.
However, Mezger vacates the King Of Pancrase on 2/10/99. This was portrayed
as Mezger's decision since he was set to face Vitor Belfort on the 3/5/99
UFC PPV, but speculation is that Pancrase asked him to vacate the title
because they bought into the Belfort myth and feared their organization
would look bad when their champion lost on another leagues show. Belfort
wound up pulling out of the UFC show due to a knee injury, so the main
event was changed to Mezger against Tito Ortiz, who Mezger had beat in
the first time in one of the more controversial UFC matches. This time,
Ortiz avenged his (at the time) lone UFC loss beating Mezger via ref stop
in 9:58. Yuki Kondo is selected as Schilt's opponent for the decision
match to crown the 8th King Of Pancrase.
