Final Resolution ~REAL vs. Justice~ IWGP 3rd Belt: Kurt Angle vs. Yuji Nagata 18:29. In this tragedy of Takada/Muto purportions, the clown prince of cartoon wrestling journeyed to Nagata's house but refused to man up and wrestle the punishing match that should be wrestled. Angle not only made Nagata wrestle an entirely different match than he would against anyone who wasn't a pansy, a match that's totally devoid of his signature kick flurries, but asked him to sell 2/3 of the match then tap to his ridiculously contrived ankle lock to boot. If I had any respect for Angle to begin with, I would have lost it with this typically hokey turd that had no relation to the big match, hell even an unmotivated house show match, everyone has come to expect from Nagata, the best heavyweight wrestler of his generation. Angle's unwarranted positive reputation should be forever stained by this nonsense. If we accept though that Nagata is doing Angle's match, it's still not a good match. It had a clumsy feel to it like Angle often didn't have a sense what Nagata was going to do (I suppose neither did anyone else once he wasn't allowed to kick...), so he wasn't in the proper starting position and they had to awkwardly improvise at the last second resulting not only in a lacked of fluidity, but just a general feeling that you weren't watching a real fight, you were instead watching poor choreography. They did several suplexes that were nice once they got to the point of hoisting the opponent, but there was just too much last second rearranging going on in this match. To add insult to injury, they had to mainly do matwork to make up for the lack of striking, which would have been fine except Angle insisted on working for the infamous Takada killing figure 4 to drive home just how phony all forms of pro wrestling really are. When he luckily couldn't win with that, he was on to his typically implausible transitions to the ankle lock. Granted most of the junior flying I like isn't going to happen in the UFC, but there's about as much chance of someone hitting a standing shooting star press in a shoot as there is of making virtually any transition into an ankle lock that Angle has ever made. *1/2

IWGP Heavyweight Title Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Shinsuke Nakamura 23:08. Great to see two NJ wrestlers in their prime headlining the Tokyo Dome against one another. Even better that it's two could have been juniors doing a junior style match for the heavyweight title. Nakamura wasn't being a badass here, using lots of suplexes and even a couple of moonsaults rather than a lot of kicks and submissions, as the match was more geared toward the spectacular. The main thing is they were trying to do a match of the year type of match to make the biggest match of the year special, to make it memorable for reasons other than it being their most attended and highest profile match. Tanahashi injured Nakamura's knee early with his Muto techniques, but as Nakamura came into the match with his left shoulder all bandaged, Tanahashi eventually switched to the more obvious focal point. Nakamura's arm was even hurting from Tanahashi blocking a lariat later, and when the doctor tried to check him out when he was down near the ropes, Tanahashi just came over and stomped the shoulder. Nakamura was the youngest to win the IWGP Heavyweight Title when he beat Tenzan on 12/9/03, but had quickly vacated it due to injury, so 4 years and 13 champions later it was nice to see him overcome his health problems enough to come good again. ****

G1 Climax A Block: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Satoshi Kojima 16:57. Kojima style energetic, all action, stiff match with excellent work but questionable, at best, selling. Wasn't the most solid match, but they lit each other up. Match actually had better strike exchanges than Kawada/Nakamura, as Tanahashi's elbows and uppercut variations were looking really good today. Kojima's machine gun chops came off more as comedy though, and kind of ruin the mood due to his stupid expressions. The back and forth no selling of the sling blade and Koji cutter leading into a double sell spot was pretty contrived. ***3/4

G1 Climax B Block: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Toshiaki Kawada 14:36. Vintage Kawada match - stiff, realistic, excellent selling, and a lot of nice touches. Kawada took Nakamura apart with his kicks, but Nakamura worked arm submissions to injure Kawada. Kawada was doing too much damage to himself to win the elbow exchange, so he tried for an armbar of his own, as it was obviously doing the job for Nakamura. Kawada didn't have his A level stiffness today, and the match was 5 minutes too short, ending rather unconvincingly to boot. ***1/2

01 World Heavyweight Title Match: Masato Tanaka vs. Yuji Nagata 18:06. These two went all out from bell to bell, delivering a brutal sprint. Their styles, though very different on paper, came together beautifully. The pace was all Tanaka's, but the offense was more toward Nagata's, with Tanaka focusing on his stiff side rather than his brawling side. Both men were on fire and gave electric performances. They threw some awesome elbows, with the striking getting so intense than Nagata was actually cut between the nose and eye from the sliding D. It was all quite bruising, but done in a rapidfire style that made everything seem extra desperate and intense. Despite the speed, the execution was right on, with every blow seeming blistering. It wasn't their most diverse match, but I felt like that was a plus, as they put everything they had into knocking each other out, focusing on impact rather than say Tanaka pulling out wild out of the ring moves because he can. It still felt like Tanaka's match because it was so high paced, but it absolutely felt like the war Nagata gives us when he's at his best. There was, of course, some compromise on both parts, but those matches that feel so true to both men are really the best sort of matches because they don't seem routine. They instead have that organic feel, the idea that this particular opponent just took them in a certain direction for this particular match, that it was the right one for today, or so they thought. ****
