-1 1/2hr. Q=Perfect

6/29/14

2000 North American Trials: Ben Earwood vs. Dennis Hallman. Hallman is such a submission master I should know to expect anything, but it was still hard to believe that he just won right away with a standing guillotine before they really even locked up.

2001: Mark Laimon vs. Alexander Cacarko. Basically a stalemate with Laimon using his feet on Cacarko's hips to keep him off.

1999 -77kg Final: Jean Jacques Machado vs. Kaoru Uno. Uno was poised to establish himself as one of the elite MMA fighters with his legendary win over Rumina Sato at Shooto's 10th Anniversary on 5/29/99 just around the corner. He may not be the elite level BJJ blackbelt Machado is, but he's also a judo blackbelt and he beat established MMA names John Lewis, Pedro Duarte, & Eddie Ruiz to get to the final. Not that I need to explain how good a fighter Uno was in the late 90's and early 00's, he went to draw with BJ Penn in his prime for the UFC LH Title after all, but anyone who never saw him before would think he was some greenhorn that shouldn't have been let out of the dojo the way Machado owned him, totally snowballing poor Uno's disadvantage. Machado lived up to every bit of his legend here, immediately reversing with an omoplata and mounting then distracting with a choke to setup the armbar and take Uno's back. Machado was perpetual motion here, just chaining position advancements and submission attempts until he finally finishing with the rear naked choke. I was definitely in awe of Machado's mastery. Good match.

2001: Nino Schembri vs. Alexander Savko. Fantastic quick omoplata submission from Elvis.

2001: Ricco Rodriguez vs. Roger Neff. Ricco took the 275lb wrestler down and got possibly the quickest tap from a kneebar in competitive fighting history.

2000 North American Trials: Matt Serra vs. Dan Gilbert. 2 time Jr. National All-American Wrestler Dan (brother of UFC's Joey Gilbert) used his explosive wrestling to get himself out of trouble, but Serra's grappling is so good it was almost as if Dan could only move from a bad position to a worse one.

2000 Under 98.9kg Weight Class Bronze Medal: Tito Ortiz vs. Matt Hughes. Tito must have had 45 pounds on Hughes, so he was the one getting the takedowns, but there were some good scrambles on the mat.

7/6/14

2000 North American Trials: Chris Lytle vs. Felipe Neto. Lytle amazingly wins with an arm-in rear naked choke.

2000: Ricardo Morais vs. Mark Robinson. Morais wanted to get it to the ground, but Robinson was the far superior wrestler. There was endless staring at each other in standup, but once Robinson got it to the ground, Morais had him under pressure with submissions from the bottom.

Baret Yoshida vs. Naoya Uematsu. Yoshida incorporates athleticism, quickness, & flexibility into his submission attempts like few others. Who needs takedowns when you can just leap for a flying armbar or triangle, and if that fails, hit a triangle off your back.

2001: Jean Jacques Machado vs. Ricardo Arona. Machado made virtually all the attempts to finish, but Arona's size and power were the difference here as he always held the top position.

2001: Matt Serra vs. Takanori Gomi. Gomi isn't a BJJ guy, so Serra could just pull guard confident he could either submit him from the bottom or reverse. Serra was relentless here, totally breaking Gomi down.

ADCC Best of The ADCC 7/13/14 & 7/20/14

7/13/14

2001: Ricardo Almeida vs. Yuri Stetsenko. Almeida got Stetsenko's back quickly, but Stetsenko just laid still blocking his neck for several before Almeida finally got the choke. A deadly watch.

2001: Jeff Monson vs. Alejandro Aspas. Monson's wrestling was too good, muscling a single leg, but he could also pass, win scrambles, etc. A 14-0 score pretty much says it all.

2005: Ricco Rodriguez vs. Marcelo Garcia. The most fascinating match on the serious so far. I want to say it was like Keith Hackney vs. Emmanuel Yarborough at UFC 3, but that's not right because Rodriguez is genuinely talented. Still, Garcia looked like a pesky mini estrella going against the fat farm ready King Kong Ricco, and as you'd suspect Garcia was just too fast and skilled for Ricco. It looked funny seeing Garcia as the monkey on Ricco's back, though not so much for Marcelo when Ricco decided to slam his way out of a submission that wasn't actually a submission, knocking the wind out of Garcia. Obviously Garcia's problem was it's hard to move that much weight no matter how good your technique and how much leverage you can get, so Rodriguez was the one who was on top most of the time, but Garcia was as active as one could be from the bottom, forcing Rodriguez to slow the match down wherever he could. Ultimately, Marcelo pulled an Imanari and just scissored a standing Ricco's leg and heel hooked him for the win. Good match.

2003 North American Trials: Eddie Bravo vs. Mark Ashton. Bravo's style was much different than anything seen on these shows, both for the positions he tried to create but also just the effort he put into squeezing on moves that weren't submissions. Bravo got his famous twister, but no spine locks were allowed at this point. Still, it served it's secondary purpose of allowing him to get his opponent's back, and from there he choked Ashton out.

2003: Royler Gracie vs. Mark Cordosa. Gracie pulled guard, elevated Cordosa, and tucked onto his stomach for a heel hook finish.

2003: Eddie Bravo vs. Royler Gracie. Royler wasn't very aggressive from the top, and I'm not sure if that because he was trying to figure out what this Bravo kid was doing or simply because Bravo put so much effort into holding him close. Gracie threw up a triangle as soon as Bravo swept him, and soon swept back. Bravo was working mission control, and Gracie was trying to pass. It almost seemed Gracie got distracted fighting to get Bravo's right arm out of the way so he could maybe pass around that side, and Bravo took advantage with a triangle that Gracie tried his absolute best to refuse to submit to, but ultimately yielded.

7/20/14

2001: Jean Jacques Machado vs. Serguei Onishuk. Machado is beautiful to watch against a lesser opponent because when you can't stop him, he just doesn't stop. Machado was just perpetual motion, always moving, advancing, and attacking. Onishuk had no idea what hit him, and was so busy defending he was never able to launch any semblance of an offensive game, which, of course, just allowed Machado to be that much more aggressive. Onishuk had one lucky sweep, but otherwise this was a clinic from Machado. Good match.

2001: Egan Inoue vs. Volodymyr Zharkov. This was the grappling version of a Ben Askren match, except Inoue did actually, thankfully, finish. Inoue controlled on top all fight, patiently inching into better positions until he mounted then annoyed Zharkov with the Ezekiel choke until he gave his back and Inoue immediately finished with a rear naked choke.

2003: Matt Lindland vs. Jacare Souza. For me, the most interesting wrestling is when we see how other aspects of MMA can not only make it work, but overcome the odds so to speak. For instance, Jacare isn't 1/100th the wrestler Olympic Silver Medalist Lindland is, but by trying a flying triangle, even though it failed, he's able to transition right into a successful single leg and work from the top position without having to get a reversal. And once Jacare was on top, Lindland was no match for this BJJ and was quickly submitted in an armbar.

1998: Carlos Newton vs. Rodrigo Gracie. A lot of movement, and scrambling, but Gracie is, for the most part, the one who is always on top and who is launching the attacks. Gracie gets the decision, but Newton was always in the match.

2000: Tito Ortiz vs. Ricardo Arona. Arona started off content to work from his back, and whether he was pulling guard or getting taken down, the story of regulation was Ortiz's top control vs. Arona's submission attempts. Arona never came close to hooking Ortiz, so in OT he was much more aggressive, both in going for takedowns and in trying for the standing guillotine.

Baret Yoshida vs. Alexander De Freitas. These guys didn't bother with wrestling, they just dropped to the ground and attacked with leglocks the entire fight until Yoshida finally hit a kneebar. Fun stuff.

2005 North American Trials -60kg Final: : Megumi Fujii vs. Gazzy Parman. Quick toe hold win for Fujii.

1999: Ricco Rodriguez vs. Hayato "Mach" Sakurai. Cool seeing such a size mismatch, but it was mostly a stalemate as Ricco respected Sakurai's speed & Sakurai respected Ricco's size. Thus, Ricco was very hesitant to shoot, and Sakurai didn't want to pull guard and give the top to a guy who outweighed him by over 100 pounds. Sakurai was on his butt after his single leg failed, and Ricco tried to shoot his thighs forward to knock Sakurai to his back and then mount, but Sakurai maintained a half guard and went right into a heel hook that Ricco tried to ride out but was eventually forced to tap to.

2001: Jean Jacques Machado vs. Tsuyoshi Kosaka. Machado for sure offers the most entertainment value in grappling, and likely the most skill as well. Another day at the office, another entertaining, high movement Machado match where his opponent could do little more than present him with more openings by actively defending his attacks. I love how Machado moves to get you to react and then chains one submission after another as you move to defend. One such sequence started with Machado trying to take TK's back and wound up with a near triangle and armbar by Machado. Machado mostly seemed to be trying to annoy TK with the Ezekiel choke, and sure enough, when he let go and postured up, TK tried to buck, and Machado swung right into an armbar for the win. Good match.

Mike Van Arsdale vs. Marcio Ribeiro Da Cruz. Van Arsdale had top position, but was still always on the defensive, first from what looked like a side sweep, but Marcio turned it into a kneebar for the win.

Saulo Ribeiro vs. Dean Lister. A really tight match. There were some exciting moments and some down times, but it was very high level, and you always felt either could win. Ribeiro was the better BJJ guy and had all the experience on his side, but Lister had the size, strength, wrestling, and all around more diverse and multi disciplined game. Lister could gain control, but Ribeiro was so good in the scrambles that he couldn't get him in real trouble or score on him. The highlight was when Ribeiro had a front facelock sort of position with Lister on his knees, and Lister somehow stood with Ribeiro on his back. Ribeiro avoided getting slammed by sliding out the side, but Lister dropped into a leg lock. It looked like Lister was going to win when he finally scored points in overtime with a takedown, but he wasn't content to just ride it out, gambling his control for a step over kneebar that shocking finished the former champion. Good match.

8/3/14

2005 North American Trials: Marloes Coenen vs. Yuki Kondo. Coenen didn't try traditional takedowns, she instead went for a flying armbar and tried to drop from rear mount into a kneebar. When the later failed, she stood over Kondo and appeared to be trying to pass guard, but instead grabbed one of the legs Kondo was fending her off with and dropped into a kneebar for the win.

2001: Ricco Rodriguez vs. Marcio Ribeiro Da Cruz. Marcio was surprisingly able to be competitive in the wrestling aspects, although moreso when they were on their feet. However, his no gi game isn't nearly as good, so Ricco was competitive in the BJJ, especially given he was ultimately working from the top. They were pretty patient, not forcing anything, or in my opinion attacking enough to keep me into it. Ultimately, in OT, Ricco had Marcio's back, but Marcio rolled to his back and hooked a triangle. Ricco tried to powerbomb his way out of it, but knock Marcio free, tapping as soon as he realized this.

1999: Kaoru Uno vs. John Lewis. Despite their quickness, athleticism, and workrate, it was pretty much a stalemate in standup because neither could get a takedown and they refused to pull guard. I was surprised that Uno was able to pass and get a rear naked choke from the side without any body control that Lewis appeared to have no counter, and Uno was able to quickly finish without any sort of body lock.

2000: Matt Hughes vs. Jeremy Horn. Hughes used Horn's forward momentum to hit a belly to belly at the outset and went into scarf position but Horn turned to his knees only to get guillotined. I was extremely surprised at how quickly and easily Hughes was able to not only toss but especially submit his teammate, who is by far and away the submission guru of the stable, but in his book Hughes admitted it was a work done in an effort to get the cash bonuses for Best Throw and Quickest Submission.

2001 Final: Baret Yoshida vs. Royler Gracie. Gracie wore a t-shirt so big it was practically falling off him hoping Yoshida's toes would get caught in it if he got far enough to be able to try to throw his legs up for a triangle. Yoshida threw up at least 4 triangle attempts, and also was looking for the armbar, generally keeping Gracie on the defensive. Gracie made no real attempt to finish, but was on top all fight, and won on points for a leg pick.

TG: Nicole Coleman vs. Tao. A rather one-sided fight that just kept reverting to the same pattern. Nicole was aggressive, but Tao had the reach and always controlled the distance. Nicole needed to get into range, but Tao would hit her with the middle kick coming in then clinch her, utilizing her superior knee & elbow game. Tao won every round. Average match.

2005: Megumi Fujii vs. Kyra Gracie. Gracie pulled guard and controlled the offense throughout by holding Fujii so close with a sort of ezekiel choke that she could never attack. When there was separation, it was on Kyra's terms and she worked for an omoplata and ultimately finished with a triangle armbar.
