G1 Climax B Block: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Osamu Nishimura 16:23

G1 Climax B Block: Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Koji Kanemoto 16:55. Quality match, but nowhere near what they could have done had Koji been considered an equal. Tenzan mauled Kanemoto for much of the first half, getting the fans behind Kanemoto whenever he actually did something. Kanemoto finally had a big run picking on Tenzan's knee after avoiding Tenzan's moonsault. Tenzan's bum knee was something of an equalizer, setting up a big spot where Kanemoto turned the TTD into a kneebar. If there was some back and forth after Tenzan's comeback it might have been memorable, but Kanemoto fell with swift and disappointing ease. ***

G1 Climax A Block: Yuji Nagata vs. Katsuyori Shibata 12:44

G1 Climax B Block: Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Kensuke Sasaki 30:00. Big time effort. Back and forth hard hitting action throughout. It wasn't just a bunch of chop exchanges, but rather a generally rough match with Kensuke really upping the impact on his lariats. They were literally butting heads back and forth. Got off to a hot start, giving gave no indication it was going to be anything beyond a standard length match, if anything looking like it might be shorter. ***3/4

G1 Climax A Block: Genichiro Tenryu vs. Shinsuke Nakamura 14:43. A league where you are expected to wrestle a tough singles match every night is rough on a 54-year-old body. Tenryu was looking his age here, or at least rather awkward. He was in preservation mode early, so they were biding their time. The match got interesting when Nakamura finally went on offense about halfway through, and Tenryu's body began to loosen up here. I wouldn't say he ever found his rhythm, but it became an acceptable match, albeit one that had no business coming on after Tenzan and Sasaki went all out for half an hour. *3/4

G1 Climax B Block: Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Togi Makabe 11:33

G1 Climax B Block: Kensuke Sasaki vs. Koji Kanemoto 16:55. Kanemoto being in the main event didn't really add to the sense that he could win this match. Sasai did cater to Kanemoto's more offense oriented style, and they did try to make it intense in the second half. It was no classic, but certainly worthwhile. The early portion was striking and submissions, competent but kind of slow. The match picked up with Sasaki matching Kanemoto's pescado and lariating him over the guard rail. From here it was quite good as Sasaki took Kanemoto serious enough to have a good match. Again, Kanemoto went down easily though, so there wasn't any drama to the stretch run. ***

G1 Climax B Block: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Koji Kanemoto 15:45

G1 Climax A Block: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Yuji Nagata 13:08. Command performance by Nagata, who was at the very top of his game and in total control, carrying Nakamura through a smart and entertaining shoot style match. They did a great job of establishing the danger of the kicks from the outset, making the hits and misses important. As the match progressed, Nagata was really unloading on Nakamura with heavy and precise kicks. Nakamura was tough, but Nagata's kicks were consistently overwhelming him to the point he couldn't win an exchange. Nagata really should have won this match, as he was just on another level entirely, but as Nakamura was only slowing Nagata down by countering, the right finish would have been countering into a submission. I found the finish enfuriating because Nakamura inexplicably introduced flying into what had not only been a true U-style match, but one of the best shoot oriented matches in the history of the G1. To make things worse, he had balance issues, and you just felt really bad for Nagata, having to wait way too long to suddenly lose to offense that had no place in this particular match. ***1/2

G1 Climax A Block: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Masahiro Chono 14:36

G1 Climax B Block: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kensuke Sasaki 12:00. Enthusiastic sprint with bombs from start to finish. Sasaki was brutal, but was also at his most daring in this wild spotfest, throwing in every flying and power move he could think of in addition to his usual brutality. I can't remember Sasaki ever doing two dives in the first five minutes before. Sasaki just got off to a huge start, with Tanahashi finally slowing him down by using his own Northern Lights bomb on him. Still, Tanahashi couldn't take over. He'd counter once in a while, but merely got enough offense to keep the fans reacting big. Sasaki had a good thing going, trapping Tanahashi in the corner with a chop/lariat combo. I don't know why he didn't keep this as part of his arsenal, as it was fluid as well as devestating. Sasaki was a little sloppy and always lacks something in the grace department, but this was one of his most thrilling matches, and a great effort from both men. The finish suited the match with Tanahashi winning the only way he could, with a single counter that was consistent with his offensive capability throughout the match. Tanahashi took everything Sasaki had and survived, taking B Block with a 6-1 record in the process. ****

G1 Climax A Block 3rd Place Match: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Masahiro Chono 4:39

G1 Climax Round 2: Genichiro Tenryu vs. Kensuke Sasaki 8:11

G1 Climax Round 2: Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Shinsuke Nakamura 13:06. Nakamura was in rough shape coming into the match, and Tenzan was in bully mode, following where his old mentor Chono left off. Tenzan immediately reopened his forehead with repeated headbutts then shifted his focus to the bum knee. Nakamura was systematically destroyed, rarely able to do anything beyond absorb punishment and kick out. As the match progressed though, it was Tenzan who was getting frustrated because Nakamura exceeded the amount of punishment a Tenzan opponent should be able to withstand. The fans believed in Nakamura, and went nuts anytime Nakamura gave them hope, but there was no payoff as this time Tenzan was ready for the armbar counter to his anaconda vice (3/28/04 finish) and never relented in his onslaught. It was a good match, but Tenzan's offense has been better and it's more exciting when his opponent brings more than heart. ***

G1 Climax Semifinal: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Genichiro Tenryu 6:34

G1 Climax Semifinal: Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Katsuyori Shibata 7:11

G1 Climax Final: Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi 21:01. After holding off Nakamura & Shibata, Tenzan had just one more potential new generation ace to dispatch of to capture his forth tournament in a year, once again proving this was his time. Tanahashi was much healthier than Nakamura, and thus much more competitive. He was able to exchange with Tenzan and hold his half of the offense early on, but as time progressed his much bigger and stronger opponent beat him down. Tanahashi was extremely animated throughout, really fired up and a bit too emphatic and showy with some of his mannerisms. He was also a few holds short, especially considering his size disadvantage, but he took some nice bumps and showed enough charisma and ability to make you feel he was worthy of this final. Neither wrestler was anywhere's near awesome, but it was a quality match throughout, aided by a very receptive crowd. Tenzan became to second wrestler to win back to back G1 Climaxes, following Chono who took the first two in '91 & '92. ***

VOL. 1 SINGLE MATCH SELECTION

2/16/97 Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan, J-CROWN Junior Heavyweight Title Match: Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Koji Kanemoto 19:26. A week after Liger's best singles with Otani, he serves up his best with Kanemoto. The match comes off as a spotfest on TV because the second half is so overloaded with spectacular moves back and forth, but it's really quite well built before they go off on one another. Kanemoto comes out fired up, and really takes it to Liger during the first half. He throws a lot of hard kicks early, targeting the knee to set up his body work. Liger is really looking overmatched here, and Kanemoto is at his cocky best, enjoying every opportunity to take liberties with Liger and put the boots to him. Liger finally avoids a moonsault and comes back with a series of shoteis. The match kicks into high gear from here, with essentially an elongated finishing sequence that's probably the most exciting junior wrestling of the year. ****3/4
