TO 1999 Bout Part 2: Mima Shimoda vs. Etsuko Mita |
|
I wanted this match to be more intense than it was. It just doesn't make any sense to break this team up and then have them wrestle each other if they are still going to act like they like each other. Of course, it didn't make any sense to break this team up in the first place, and luckily they were back together almost as soon as they split up. The pacing was slower when they wrestled each other in AJW, but they did more brawling, although still not as much as I expected, and more big moves. The early portion wasn't particularly eventful. Mita started brawling out of the ring then used the chair in the ring until Shimoda got it away from her. Shimoda did her tope con hilo and also brawled when they were out of the ring. They began doing near falls around 12:30, so it basically was big spots back and forth from here on out. Shimoda put Mita in the chair on the apron and tried to kick her off, but Mita got up and hit her then gave her a high angle powerbomb for a near fall. Mita then put Shimoda in the chair and kicked her off the apron. Mita followed with a Death Valley bomb on the floor. This should have been the finish because if a regular Death Valley bomb is often good enough for a win then this has to be way too deadly for anyone to get up from. Instead, Mita dragged Shimoda back into the ring and Death Valley bombed her, but Shimoda kicked out. This was just a ridiculous way to kill of Mita's finisher. Shimoda then kicked out of another Death Valley bomb. To make things even worse, Shimoda slipped out of a second Death Valley bomb and came back with a lame kakato otoshi and a rolling kakato otoshi. Yes folks, this is your deluxe Super Koji deluxe most moronic segment of the day. Mita did another Death Valley bomb, but Shimoda kicked out so she tried for a fourth Death Valley bomb, but Shimoda was waiting for it by now so she slippped out and did a lame kakato otoshi for the win. The finish was just ludicrous. Shimoda could survive two Death Valley bombs in a row when one is even on the floor, but Mita can't take one crummy kick? I liked that they did a few different things at the end, but Shimoda should have been the one doing the big moves to beat Mita, rather than barely selling Mita's finishers before beating her with one love tap. Michael: I thought they did a good job of playing the "being familiar with my partner's spots" card but the match, while good, just seemed to lack something. All the near falls towards the end were pretty strong, but Shimoda survived 3 DVBs (including one on the padded floor) and got the win with a kick that missed in HBKesque fashion, so that sort of took it down a little.
