QUEEN OF ARSION TITLE MATCH:
Aja Kong vs. Mariko Yoshida

This match was going along nicely, but it just ended. They used a lot of big moves early since they weren't going long, but unlike their previous title match, the drama wasn't built. When you think about it, what do you really have if the top two wrestlers are having a title match on the biggest show of the year and there isn't any heat or drama? It was a good match, but it just fell flat because one would have thought these two were too good to deliver anything less than excellence.

I wish this match was more toward Yoshida's style than Aja's. Well, I suppose I could say that about most any ARSION match because her style is the best, but anyway this was a bunch of spots in between Aja's chokes. These two had each other well scouted, so they were countering each other left and right. Choking would have been a good strategy for Aja in a long match because it's viable offense that conserves energy, but I didn't need to see 1/4 of a non-shoot oriented match be devoted to chokes. Otherwise it was a match that had good action, but a lame finish.

Yoshida did one air raid crash, but Aja is so big that it wound up being a backdrop instead of a headdrop. The rest of the time, Aja found ways to stop Yoshida's top finisher, which kept her from looking too bad and perhaps prevented a hernia. The finish saw Yoshida run off the ropes for a kick after Aja blocked an air raid crash, but Aja caught Yoshida's leg and gave her an uraken for a near fall. Aja proceeded to pick Yoshida up and deliver another uraken for the win. Considering Yoshida was in control, I expected it to take more than two moves to beat her. Granted, it was Aja's best move twice in a row, but it hardly seemed like I was alone in not buying it. I kind of think they didn't want to have that great of a match because they wanted the TWINSTAR match that followed to totally steal the show, but still you'd expect so much more from these two. I mean, this was supposed to be one of the great ones, but turned out to be the worst Yoshida match I've seen from 1999.
