THE FINAL STARLET: Aja Kong & Mikiko Futagami vs. Candy Okutsu & Reggie Bennett |
|
"This match was interesting because you had Futagami looking to avenge her flash loss to Candy on 4/17, Aja looking to get back at Reggie for the quick loss in the first round of ARS, and Reggie teaming with the woman who beat her in the finals of the ARS tourny three days earlier. Unfortunatley they didn't really play into any of those stories, so while the match was good it wasn't as good as it could've been (and the crowd didn't help either)," wrote Michael Smith. This wasn't much different from the tag main event on a small AJW or JWP show. It was basically ring work. It was quite good since Aja & Futagami work well with Candy, who carried the load. Reggie looked good when she was in, mainly doing her high spots. The main problem was that, as you'd expect, they kind of took it easy early on because this was a small show. Candy was coming off winning the ARS tournament, so she was no longer an underdog. She was a whole lot closer to Aja's level than she was before, but Aja still kicked her ass. The gist of the match was that Candy got beat on most of the way, but Aja & Gami couldn't put her away no matter what they threw at her. At one point, Futagami caught Candy with a Yakuza kick, which was the move Candy beat her with in their 4/17 singles match, but Candy kicked out even though Futagami made a deep cover. The match got quite good from this point forward, as they turned things up when the match was winding down. The finish saw Candy land on her feet for Futagami's suplex and apply her sleeper, which is the move she used to beat Reggie in the final of ARS '98 three days earlier, but Futagami quickly escaped and tried a backdrop. Candy once again landed on her feet and locked in the sleeper, but this time Futagami was unable to escape. Thus, the match once again put Candy over huge because the higher rated women pushed her, but she took all they had and came back to beat them. 16:39
