Pancrase Pancrash! Pancrase
ADVANCE PANCRASE TOUR 1998 taped 9/14/98 Tokyo Nippon Budokan (11,500) |

This was Pancrase's 5th Anniversary show. I found it to be disappointing, like most Pancrase from 1998. It's good to have a high level of fighters and even matchups. The ability of these guys had always been underrated because most hadn't participated in high profile shoot shows like UFC. In the early to mid 90's, most of their guys would have won if they did. It got tougher for them as time went on because everyone was cross training and they weren't doing much striking at all, and only with open hands. The one thing the Pankration matches has done is give them that experience, but since they haven't really beaten high level fighters in those matches, they aren't exactly making the league look like the most talent overall fighters in the world. them. Anyway, the problem at this point was that the rules limit your ability to create openings on the mat, especially when it comes to striking, and the fighters are too talented and too familiar with each other to make a stupid mistake that would lead to them getting caught in a submission. This lead to a ton of full time matches, especially with such short time limits. I have a lot of patience, but 20 minutes of positioning only to wind up with another draw really tries it. |
