Heavykyu Senshuken Jiai Geikoto (fluorescent light bulb) & Barbed Wire Board Death Match Shadow WX vs. Tomoaki Honma Taped 10/17 Tokyo Korakuen Hall (1,620) |

In order to erase any doubt about who we should be going for, Honma came out to the epic Gamma Ray's tune "Heading For Tomorrow," while WX wrestled in an Andy Pettitte jersey. Seriously, Honma was just a one man show here. He bumped his ass off here and bled from seemingly every part of his body. WX kind of looks like Hideki Hosaka, but isn't even that "good." His "skills" are bleeding and hitting people with objects. Honma didn't get much offense in, but he made it dramatic by continuing to kick out in spite of taking a hellacious beating. The thing about being a bumper in Big Japan is the guys with no ability see that and you wind up taking all the bumps while they just plod around cracking you over the head with objects. Honma was pummeled from the get go. It was sick just how much blood he lost. I mean, every time he was face down or bending over, you'd see blood squirting out of his forehead. He finally made a comeback with flying moves where he'd break a fluorescent light bulb over WX's head. His best chance of winning came when he running powerbombed WX through a barbed wire board that was draped across two chairs then went right into his 4 no ji shiki jackknife, the move he beat Winger with to earn this title shot. The fans seemed to really want Honma to win, but it wasn't to be. WX came back breaking a lightbulb across Honma's stomach to stop Honma's diving body attack. He Liger bombed Honma on 3-4 lightbulbs, but Honma just kicked out. Honma had glass stuck in his back, and was bleeding in several spots including a cut on his arm that looked like it would definitely leave a scar, but he had no intention of quitting. Unfortunately, he finally succumbed to Honma "brainbustering" him onto a board that was draped across two chairs. This was WX's second successful defense. WX is too young to be one of those Tiger Jeet Singh sword wielding stiffs (not that he carries a sword, but I mean that type of a bum), but Honma was so good that the match was entertaining in spite of WX. Honma was over enough that they could have had him win, but he was also over in a way that the fans might keep paying to see him keep trying to reach the top. He's good in that role because his offense is always secondary to the punishment he takes, but then again so is Misawa's if you think about it. Honma's only been wrestling for two years, he just got so good so fast, meaning there's no hurry to make him the champ (which they did since I first wrote this, not that I'm complaining about the huge push he's recieved in the first two weeks of 2000). The only thing is that he's not a big guy and if he keeps taking this kind of punishment to stay over as the puntable challenger, he might wind up burning out quickly. However, if he keeps doing this style and his body holds up, he'll wind up being the best death match wrestler there is and the best death match wrestler there was. Jason: I liked this match because instead of just using the gimmicks to just hit each other over the head with then no selling them, they had the willing Honma take most of the punishment from the gimmicks and play the role of the underdog who has to make the huge comeback to win. Even though the comeback fell short, I think it will build interest with the fans to see Honma win. Honma did a really great job playing his role in this match, and Shadow WX was more than willing to destroy Honma to get a story across. Definitely better than two guys hitting each other with light bulbs and no selling the shots. 23:12
